" What s with the get-up? Is that the company uniform or something? " " This? All P.I.s wear a trench coat. " " Dude, that s a brown bathrobe. " "I shrugged and straightened out my sleeves. First rule of private investigation, Ivy: work with what you ve got. " Twelve-year-old Howard Wallace lives by his list of rules of private investigation. He knows more than anyone how to work with what he s got: a bathrobe for a trench coat, a makeshift office behind the school equipment shed, and not much else least of all, friends. So when a hot case of blackmail lands on his desk, he s ready to take it on himself . . . until the new kid, Ivy Mason, convinces him to take her on as a junior partner. As they banter through stakeouts and narrow down their list of suspects, Howard starts to wonder if having Ivy as a sidekick and a friend is such a bad thing after all."

Howard Wallace is a kid going through some stuff so his way of coping is to emulate classic hard-boiled detectives like Sam Spade and Phillip Marlowe and he wears a brown bathrobe as a trench coat. Needless to say this is a bit awkward in middle school.

This was a fun book. Howard Wallace is a cynical middle school kid who emulates Sam Spade and Phillip Marlowe and says things like "Orange juice is a mood enhancer. I require all my surliness today." Ivy Mason, new girl in town, talks him into taking her on as junior partner, and eventually friend. Kids won't get the Sam Spade and Phillip Marlowe references, but will appreciate the humor and friendship.

My Amazon order finally arrived today. I have to laugh at myself for buying both a Kindle and a hardcover book in the same order 😁

Lynnsoprano My kind of Amazon order! I'm probably 50-50 physical books vs Kindle reads. 7y

I ordered these on Sunday with prime 2 day shipping and now they're delayed. I hate how Amazon doesn't even bother to send an email to let me know their delayed status and when I check my account they're basically like "oopsy" and don't offer anything to compensate for the lateness. And as the screenshot shows, they're still including today as a possibility when there's no chance for that. Why bother with prime if I don't get my stuff on time? ?

CareBear If it's two day prime and they're late and you complain, they'll give you a month free. 7y
Amie @CareBear thanks for the info! I was planning to see when they actually arrive and then complain. I wish their customer service was more proactive and was like, "we messed up and here's how we'll fix it" without needing to complain. But it's good to know that they will do something! 7y
Jess_Read_This Definitely escalate it. I had a similar issue and got a "sorry" response to which I reasoned with a long complaint over their packaging, the money I pay for the prime service and the expectation that goes with it, and also why I shop Amazon for the convenience. Then they started to try to fix things with refunds, a month free, etc. Im finding their customer service is slipping over the past year.. along with their packaging and damaged items sent 7y

Just starting this kids mystery... I think we've got a young Sam Spade or Phillip Marlowe here 🕵️

Such a fun mystery! I love Howard (for teachers, he would be a great example of voice when you talk about writing). I love how he and Ivy come together. I loved the caper/case and how it worked out. Can't wait to read more of Howard and Ivy's adventures!!

For years I've been reading reviews/blurbs that describe books "if you like Veronica Mars." This is the first time a book has actually hit that benchmark. Fun, smart and I hope it's a series.
