This was a charity shop find which I thought I would read as a break from the Booker long list. Had to stop for a weep whilst Willie Dunne sings Ave María to his comrades after scenes of carnage.
This was not a scene of bravery, but it seemed to Willie in his fear and horror that there was a truth in it nonetheless. It was the thing before a joke was fashioned about it, before an anecdote was conjured up to make it safe, before a proper story in the newspaper, before some fellow with the wits would make a history of it.

pickThere‘s no such thing as a WW1 novel based in the trenches with a happy ending is there? And this doesn‘t break the trend!
A slightly different slant in that it‘s based on the Irish recruitment to the war effort -with commentary on what was going on back in Ireland.
A bleak, poignant novel, beautifully written, but you won‘t finish with a smile on your face.
This book is 💔 and the writing is sublime.
There has been no lunchtime reading 😔
I‘m working at home on drafting a student protection plan and reading a pile of documentation for an audit tomorrow. Hopefully reading later - this is my current read.
