Foxfire, Wolfskin and Other Stories of Shape-Shifting Women
Foxfire, Wolfskin and Other Stories of Shape-Shifting Women | Sharon Blackie
8 posts | 5 read | 15 to read
From an established writer of empowering literature comes a first fictional collection - of transformational power. Drawing on N. European folklore rather than Greek myth or male-interpreted fairy tales, these are the original feminist voices. Sharing revenge and rebirth, capturing love and shaking off the past, changing the elements and shedding skins, they are heroines all. Each shapeshifting woman has an extraordinary story of change and survival to tell, and each story is born out of a regional folk tale, from Iceland to Ireland, Scotland to Scandanavia, Croatia to Cornwall.

This is a fascinating collection of folktale retellings. Some are familiar, even if elements were changed by Blackie, but some are new to me. Blackie includes brief notes on the original stories at the end, which is interesting and helpful. I love seeing what an author changes in their version and why.

#WyrdAndWonder day 12: myths and legends

A #shelfie of retellings! I love myths told straight and myths reimagined, so there‘s many more across the shelves. Shout out to the gorgeous Foxfire, Wolfskin and Other Stories of Shapeshifting Women by Sharon Blackie, which is a thing of claws and teeth and love and beauty.

In Foxfire, a retelling of a Swedish story, our protagonist finds her wildness again and in this twist connects with her husband again. I'm not sure I like the price she has to pay for her victory though.

“Say the [she-]wolf gets the last laugh. Ha ha ha.“

In “Wolfskin,“ Blackie's powerful retelling of a Croation story, the she-wolf may be silenced and forced into a life of enslavement to the man who stole her wildness, but she “gets the last laugh.“ The writing is exquisite!

A glorious collection of retelling and re-imaginings centering female characters and frequently challenging the traditional female fairy tale experience. Particular favourites for me: The Last Man Standing, The Bogman's Wife, Meeting Baba Yaga and No Country For Old Women

This is a collection of short stories with a theme of strong women, all based on myths and legends from countries around the world.

But, it‘s not that simple…..there is magic, heartbreak, love, fear and power. It is beautifully written and really touches a nerve at times and will make you laugh and cry.
