Red Dawn meets Escape from New York and The Hunger Games (Booklist) in an action-packed dystopian fantasy filled with prose [that] is gorgeous and brilliant and tells a satisfyingly dark tale through alternating the two sisters points of view (VOYA, starred review). Its been nearly two decades since the Red Allies first attacked New York, and Manhattan is now a prisoner-of-war camp, ruled by Rolladin and her brutal, impulsive warlords. For Skyler Miller, Manhattan is a cage that keeps her from the world beyond the citys borders. But for Skys younger sister, Phee, the POW camp is a dangerous playground of possibility, and the only home shed ever want. When Sky and Phee discover their moms hidden journal from the wars outbreak, they both realize theres more to Manhattanand their motherthan either of them had ever imagined. And after a group of strangers arrives at the annual POW census, the girls begin to uncover the islands long-kept secrets. The strangers hail from England, a country supposedly destroyed by the Red Allies, and Rolladins lies about Manhattans captivity begin to unravel. Hungry for the truth, the sisters set a series of events in motion that end in the death of one of Rolladins guards. Now theyre outlaws, forced to join the strange Englishmen on an escape mission through Manhattan. Their flight takes them into subways haunted by cannibals, into the arms of a sadistic cult in the citys Meatpacking District and, through the pages of their moms old journal, into the islands dark and shocking past.

𝟒.𝟓⭐
I recently finished With Regrets, this author‘s latest release, and stumbled upon this one by her… it intrigued me so I picked it up. It was tough to listen to at times with the way the world is lately but overall I was there for the journey it took me on, also I liked it much more than With Regrets. The fact that it‘s a standalone doesn‘t hurt. The narration by Cassandra Campbell, Joy Osmanski, & Rebecca Lowman was top-notch. I loved it.

Read in April.

This is set in a dystopian future after WWIII, Manhattan is a POW camp. Sky and Phee, sisters, have only known this world. They winter at The Park ruled by Rolladin and her warlords. A group of Englishmen arrive on the island and the sisters learn that the war has been over for some time. After an incident, they and their mother escape with the men. On the run, can they escape the island and it‘s many dangers? ⬇️

Bookzombie Not my favorite dystopian, but still a pick. This was also my #Bookspin for April. 11mo

Author Lee Kelly has created a cold, dystopian world on the island of Manhattan following an invasion by the Red Allies. This story follows a struggling a mother who is trying to raise her daughters in the streets of the devastated city; trying to protect their innocence while still teaching them survival skills. I loved this book so so much. The characters were entirely relatable, which cranked up the tension.

Very good but the last third was really unsettling to me. A cult. Why did there have to be a cult?
