Remember Me Like This
Remember Me Like This: A Novel | Bret Anthony Johnston
NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review Esquire BookPage A gripping novel with the pace of a thriller but the nuanced characterization and deep empathy of some of the literary canons most beloved novels, Remember Me Like This introduces Bret Anthony Johnston as one of the most gifted storytellers writing today. With his sophisticated and emotionally taut plot and his shimmering prose, Johnston reveals that only in caring for one another can we save ourselves. Look for special features inside. Join the Random House Readers Circle for author chats and more. Four years have passed since Justin Campbells disappearance, a tragedy that rocked the small town of Southport, Texas. Did he run away? Was he kidnapped? Did he drown in the bay? As the Campbells search for answers, they struggle to hold whats left of their family together. Then, one afternoon, the impossible happens. The police call to report that Justin has been found only miles away, in the neighboring town, and, most important, he appears to be fine. Though the reunion is a miracle, Justins homecoming exposes the deep rifts that have diminished his family, the wounds they all carry that may never fully heal. Trying to return to normal, his parents do their best to ease Justin back into his old life. But as thick summer heat takes hold, violent storms churn in the Gulf and in the Campbells hearts. When a reversal of fortune lays bare the familys greatest fearsand offers perhaps the only hope for recoveryeach of them must fight to keep the ties that bind them from permanently tearing apart. Theres real humanity in Johnstons writing, and its heartening to spend time with these folks as they relearn how to be a family.Ron Charles, The Washington Post Deeply empathetic and masterfully constructed . . . a novel that has both the feel of a great epic and the focused intensity of standing on a highwire.Salon From the Trade Paperback edition.

Bailedbailed

Listening to the audio and I‘m bailing on chapter 18. It feels like it‘s trying to move somewhere but it‘s sooooooo slow because it‘s overwritten. I‘d like to know what happens in the end but not enough to wade thru. Is this supposed to be a quasi literary thriller? If so, the pacing is off.

Pickpick

A terrific novel of human psychology, this starts with Justin Campbell missing for the past 4.5 years, since age 11. Events occur that impact his family and we watch each person‘s reactions as many things remain unsaid between them. This is a strong exploration of family and relationships. I would suggest against reading the description—the less you know, the better with this one.

I heard Bret at a writers' festival in Iowa this fall. He said the goal of a writer is to make the reader want something. Then . . . . . make them wait for it. Wow. That is exactly what he does. I normally avoid books about missing children (usually just too sad) but this one is different. So glad I read it. No wonder he is director of creative writing at Harvard. Lucky students.
