Each Tiny Spark
Each Tiny Spark | Pablo Cartaya

From award-winning author Pablo Cartaya comes a deeply moving middle grade novel about a daughter and father finding their way back to each other in the face of their changing family and community. Emilia Torres has a wandering mind. It's hard for her to follow along at school, and sometimes she forgets to do what her mom or abuela asks. But she remembers what matters: a time when her family was whole and home made sense. When Dad returns from deployment, Emilia expects that her life will get back to normal. Instead, it unravels. Dad shuts himself in the back stall of their family's auto shop to work on an old car. Emilia peeks in on him daily, mesmerized by his welder. One day, Dad calls Emilia over. Then, he teaches her how to weld. And over time, flickers of her old dad reappear. But as Emilia finds a way to repair the relationship with her father at home, her community ruptures with some of her classmates, like her best friend, Gus, at the center of the conflict. Each Tiny Spark by Pablo Cartaya is a tender story about asking big questions and being brave enough to reckon with the answers.

Really good middle grade audiobook, read by the author. Tackles many issues: ADHD, immigration, school redistricting, absent parent, gender roles, etc. As pictured on the cover, the main character Emilia learns to weld while helping her dad fix up a car in the family's auto shop (although this is not really the main part of the plot).

Girls who weld, I'm up for it. I can weld. Just very badly.

*coming 8/6/19* MG read -addresses a PLETHORA of social issues-( ADHD, immigration, PTSD, Socio-economic divisions, cultural traditions/gender expectations, whew.) Yet, Cartaya handles them objectively via thoughtful characters, a sweet story, and timely lens. I loved Arturo—this book did not have the same lively pace, and its exposition took a while to build. Overall, an enjoyable, relevant story that could bring up some great discussions.

This book is absolutely amazing, and I have so many good things to say. I love that it brings attention to neurodiveristy, PTSD, and immigration issues/laws. This book covers some big issues and it does so in a way that is accessible to middle grade readers and get them thinking about what is going on in their world. I'm looking forward to reading other books by Cartaya. #mglit #middlegradelit #readinginthemiddle
