Cod's Tale | Mark Kurlansky
1 post | 1 read | 1 reading
"Excellent ink drawings, brightened with colorful washes, illustrate incidents from the text with clarity, a flair for the dramatic, and a sense of humor." (Booklist, starred review) "Kurlansky is a masterful storyteller. . . . Schindler's pictures, from serious to silly, add to the pleasure . . . . Readers of this title will never again look at fish and chips in quite the same way." (Kirkus Reviews) "Breezy, kid-friendly prose. . . . Fascinating and informative . . . bound to hook young readers." (The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books)

Cod's Tale | Mark Kurlansky

Realized yesterday that we have two books about fish written by the same author and purchased almost 10 years apart. We got The Cod's Tale at a museum gift shop in Gloucester our first year in MA, and then World Without Fish we got this year for my son's Build Your Library curriculum. Thanks to Mark Kurlansky, we know more about cod reproduction than I ever expected to.

mrsmarch Kurlansky also wrote one for grownups which is amazing 3y
ImperfectCJ @mrsmarch Thanks for the rec. I've been thinking about checking that one out. With as much as he's enjoyed these Kurlansky books aimed at young audiences, my 11yo might like Cod, too. 3y
TEArificbooks I will have to check these out. My kid is obsessed with sea creatures. 3y

ImperfectCJ @mdm139 Both are good, but The Cod's Tale is a little more... light-hearted, if I remember correctly. World Without Fish is focused on humans' role in destroying ocean habitat, which is important but kind of a downer. Sy Montgomery has some great books for kids and grownups, if you haven't checked those out yet. Her The Soul of an Octopus is written for adults, but my daughter and I read it together when she was fairly young (under 12). 3y
TEArificbooks @ImperfectCJ I loved Soul of an Octopus. They are now my favorite sea creature. I also recommend the My Octopus Teacher documentary on Netflix. I think it just won an Oscar. 3y
ImperfectCJ @mdm139 I'll have to check out My Octopus Teacher. Thanks for the recommendation! 3y
