Finally finished this behemoth 1363 pages of amazement. Written in the mid 1800s as weekly newspaper serial that soon captivated Europe and then the world. This story is the ancestor of many modern dramas including Batman, Shawshank Redemption, and the list goes on and on. So grateful penguin classics chose to republish this work. I loved loved this book

I‘ve had this book for years. Finally decided to start reading it today. I‘ll keep going but it is stilted, melodramatic, and just not what I thought it was. The most similar writing I can think of is the Lupin series by Maurice Le Blanc.

Oh.My! What a wonderful international collection of books! Did you knit the book sleeve, @JulietteGF ? Lady Bird Earl Grey tea. French chocolate biscuits, I‘ve eaten two already. Coffee, a candle and a tote. I‘m so spoiled with this #myfavoritebookswap! Merci!

Adventures-of-a-French-Reader Glad you like everything, yes I knitted the book sleeve ;) I'm going to open yours soon!!! 6y

Just love magazines about books and couldn't resist to borrow this one, will need to brush up on my French though... Which other bookish magazines would you recommend? :)

Adventures-of-a-French-Reader In French, the others I could lend you are Lire and Le Magazine littéraire. In English, I like Bookmarks, but honestly I didn't find one that I like as much as Books ;) 8y

So this flung itself at me when I passed it on the bookstore shelf earlier today...at 1,359 pages, it hurt just a little but it managed to stick and come home with me. Anyone familiar with it? It was a newspaper serialization between 1842-1843. Supposedly the inspiration for Les Mis and The Count of Monte Cristo. At any rate, it sounds great!

Adventures-of-a-French-Reader Hi, I've read this book in French at the age of 16, and I keep a wonderful memory of it! I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did ;) 8y
SharonGoforth @JulietteGF I'm sure I will, thanks! 8y
