#bbrc #a2z Grace worries that her family isn't a "real" family because it doesn't look like the ones she sees in books. A trip to visit her father in Africa helps her see that there are all kinds of ways to make a family.

Without patronizing young readers, this story addresses strong emotions around the nature of family and a sense of belonging. Beautiful illustrations. (I forgot I already read a "b" book, so this one's a bonus.)

Just a book that brought me joy today when I saw it in a 1st grade classroom. Grace gets to visit her father in Africa and meet her stepmother and siblings. It‘s a really beautiful book about having an extended family and the love that can bring. I loved the illustration!

Tamra Shining brown faces and magic hair puffs make my heart go all squishy because I see my daughter. 😍 Hard to explain. 🤔 (edited) 6y
TheNextBook @Tamra I love it! And I love that the images are there and she can see herself! Representation matters! 6y
Tamra @TheNextBook it does very much! And there isn‘t enough. 6y

Grace's parents split when she was young. Her father sends two tickets for Grace and Nana to vibist him and his family in Gambia. Grace learns family is what you make and to look for books with wider representations of families.
