Wastelands
Wastelands | John Joseph Adams
10 posts | 21 read | 27 to read
Famine, Death, War, and Pestilence: The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the harbingers of Armageddon these are our guides through the Wastelands... From the Book of Revelations to The Road Warrior; from A Canticle for Leibowitz to The Road, storytellers have long imagined the end of the world, weaving tales of catastrophe, chaos, and calamity. Gathering together the best post-apocalyptic literature of the last two decades from many of todays most renowned authors of speculative fiction, including George R.R. Martin, Gene Wolfe, Orson Scott Card, Carol Emshwiller, Jonathan Lethem, Octavia E. Butler, and Stephen King, Wastelands explores the scientific, psychological, and philosophical questions of what it means to remain human in the wake of Armageddon.

If you‘re a fan of dystopian sci-fi, I think you‘ll enjoy the stories in this collection. There are many permutations of the Apocalypse here by many good writers. Not all the stories are scary and sad, there are some filled with black humor. It‘s interesting to see what the writers came up with for the end of the world. Five stars.

Breakfast with my daily short story.

After I ate I made pie filling, took Casey to puppy school, and bought tart crusts to save some time. (I make great pastry, but there‘s lots of chilling involved and... yeah.) Now Casey needs a walk, after which I MIGHT decide to make today a rest day. I‘ll see how tired I am.

Texreader Yumm! 5y

This is a collection of short stories about the apocalypse by various authors, a crazy and eclectic mix. Some are dark and bleak, others are more hopeful. I loved this collection. Stephen King and Octavia E. Butler's stories were a couple of my favorites. George R. R. Martin's story was one of my least favorites. I listened to the audiobook which was performed by many narrators. 😱☠️😦

TheLondonBookworm Ooooh this sounds wicked!!!! ☺🖤 7y
tpixie Sounds like a great collection of authors! 7y

Listening to Wastelands while setting up yet another train track set. Thank goodness for audiobooks! 🎄🚂🎁 #nomoretrains #audiobookssavetheday

angrylilasian Is this a Thomas Trackmaster set? I've been debating whether or not to get them. 7y
Donna_sBookMinute Great job! ???. Are you from the Midwest? My friend used to laugh at me because I said "train tracks" instead of "railroad tracks." ? 7y
Books_Wine_Repeat @angrylilasian Yes! I'm not sure the exact name. This was a gift from my husband's boss. The kids loved it for about 30 minutes then they were done with it. It's really cool but it takes up so much space! It's 8ft long!! 😳 (edited) 7y

Books_Wine_Repeat @Donna_sBookMinute I'm from TX. Close enough? Haha. I'll always say train tracks! 😛 7y
readinginthedark Dedicated! 7y
readinginthedark Also, who says railroad tracks? Everyone I know says train tracks! 7y
PenguinInFlight Where I live (upstate NY) most people use the term "railroad tracks". 7y
angrylilasian @Donna_sBookMinute Interesting! I'm from Chicago. I never thought of "train tracks" as a Midwest term! ? 7y
angrylilasian @Books_Wine_Repeat We don't have that much space! Thanks for saving me the time and money. 😄 We'll stick with our wooden tracks. 7y
Donna_sBookMinute @angrylilasian -- I just thought it might be Midwest term because I'm from Gary; but in Texas, I only hear people say "railroad tracks." And my friend made "train tracks" sound so funny and wrong when she mocked me. 7y
