Why I Hate Canadians (Anniversary)
Why I Hate Canadians (Anniversary) | Will Ferguson
7 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
First published in 1997, this hilarious book launched satirist Will Ferguson's career. Challenging the notion that Canadians are nice, the book asks, Do we as Canadians deserve a country so great? Tackling subjects from Canada's favorite inbred royals to the mighty beaver as national icon, from sex in a canoe to all-Canadian "superhero" Captain Canuck, Ferguson rampages across the cultural landscape. The book also provides a fast-paced, opinionated overview of telling moments in Canadian history, including its run-amok Mounties and fun-loving days of the country's (unacknowledged) slave trade."

Pleased to report that this book holds up very well since I first read it over a dozen years ago. There are some dated references and the book is very much of the late 90s, but so much of what Ferguson is lampooning is still very present in Canadian identity and national myth. Another book that I wish more people would read. #canada150

All good things, including my #holiday, must come to an end. Will hopefully be able to finish this book on the plane this evening. Pleased to report that it holds up well since I last read it in high school.

#readingwomenmonth Day 20: #shelfie
@thereadingwomen

I've recently become very conscious of the disparity between male and female authors on my bookshelf and am trying to increase the proportion of books by women with my recent book purchasing. Tagged book is the one that's currently missing from the shelf.

thereadingwomen I love your shelves. When I have a house, these are the shelves I want. - A 7y

As I read all the "I should go to Canada" posts elsewhere on social media, I couldn't help but laugh..."I was tired of being Canadian...In Canada, it seems that you are either mindlessly optimistic of depressingly realistic. Having swing from one end to the other, I finally decided to bail out. I ran away, and for this I apologize."

Since moving to the East coast a couple of years ago, I miss being able to go to Black Bond Books and shop their deals. Before she passed, my mom and I enjoyed shopping together at their New West location. #getindie #Canada #BritishColumbia #BlackBondBooks
