The World's Wife: Poems | Carol Ann Duffy

Be terrified. It's you I love, perfect man, Greek God, my own; but I know you'll go, betray me, strayfrom home.So better by far for me if you were stone.--from "Medusa"Stunningly original and haunting, the voices of Mrs. Midas, Queen Kong, and Frau Freud, to say nothing of the Devil's Wife herself, startle us with their wit, imagination, and incisiveness in this collection of poems written from the perspectives of the wives, sisters, or girlfris of famous -- and infamous -- male personages. Carol Ann Duffy is a master at drawing on myth and history, then subverting them in a vivid and surprising way to create poems that have the pull of the past and the crack of the contemporary.

#booksandvinyl there‘s a great part in the Kray sisters poem where they lean on Sinatra to sing in their club and of course it‘s Nancy not frank.
This collection is wonderful, fairytales, myths, feminist and snarky.
This is one I‘m going to have to buy myself, I love it that much and it‘s a great start to poetry month.

Leftcoastzen Great album cover! Nancy looks fierce! 3mo

LazyDays I've been really enjoying your choices. This one is intense but I like it 👏 8mo
LazyDays 5 days and strong 😆 8mo
TrishB @LazyDays it‘s so tempting to just go to Plath first - but trying other books initially this time round. 8mo
batsy This does have a Plathian tone to it, in a way! 💜 8mo
LazyDays If you want to do all Plath go for it. If you want to try new poets I support you!💗💗 You've been pocsting some great stuff 👌 8mo
TrishB @batsy I find Duffy can pull off a bit of Plath when she wants - but she has a wider range - probably as she has a longer career! 8mo
TrishB @LazyDays maybe all Plath next month 😁 8mo
LazyDays That would be a fun challenge! 😊 8mo

#NUYear #PoetryandPower
From the first English female poet laureate, and what can be a more powerful a statement than that, a succinct poem which perhaps reflects on my earlier post on the problems with masculinity.

MayJasper Excellent. Thanks for sharing 1y

Jan. 13 #LitsyPoetry365 One of my all-time favourite poets. I'll forever be thankful to my friend and colleague who invited me to her reading in Mexico. Her feminist views, word play, creative perspectives, varied structures and downright brilliance make her a woman I look to for inspiration and courage. Duffy's authorial prowess is on full display in this tongue-in-cheek poem.

Mehso-so

The poetry in this collection is definitely well crafted, witty and intelligent. I love the idea of the overall theme to look at wives of famous men (be it mythological, historical etc.). But in the end I felt there were also limits to the approach (at least in the way Duffy took it on) which kept the whole collection rather heteronormative. (Also the idea that good sex is rather experienced with the 'bad' men was at best boring).

I'm not a big reader of poetry - and I need a study guide for some of these - but I loved this in Carol Ann Duffy's collection of poems about wives and women.

I hadn't heard of Carol Ann Duffy until I found several books of her poetry in a bookstore in Dingle today. Apparently, she's the first woman, first Scot, and first openly LGBT person to hold the title of Britain's Poet Laureate. The bookseller recommended this collection, which takes on the voices of different "great women" behind famous men. She said it's very funny, and the poems I read in the shop were ??? (I also picked up this bookmark.)
