Man-Eater: The Life and Legend of an American Cannibal
Man-Eater: The Life and Legend of an American Cannibal | Harold Schechter
In the winter of 1873, a small band of prospectors lost their way in the frozen wilderness of the Colorado Rockies. Months later, when the snow finally melted, only one of them emerged. His name was Alfred G. Packer, though he would soon become infamous throughout the country under a different name: the Man-Eater. After the butchered remains of his five traveling companions were discovered in a secluded valley by the Gunnison River, Packer vanished for nine years, becoming the West s most wanted man. What followed was a saga of evasion and retribution as the trial of the century worked to extricate fact from myth and Polly Pry, a once-famed pioneering journalist, took on the cause of Packer. "Man-Eater" is the definitive story of a legendary crime a gripping tale of unspeakable suffering, the desperate struggle for survival, and the fight to uncover the truth."

I'm really sucking at not buying books. However, this is only 0.99 today as an ebook, it's on my TBR list and I failed to convince my book club to read it, so I caved.

ReadingsByTheC It was only $.99, you had to! 😊 7y
LectricSheep Yup. I'm sold. Thanks for the heads up! 😁 7y
LectricSheep Oh! It's on Kindle Unlimited! Even better! 👍🏻 7y
RadicalReader @LauraJ I love finding books for such a good price like that. Found several awesome ones at the good will stores can't justify paying full price for a book 7y

I couldn't resist this at 99 cents. It seems completely weird and morbid and fascinating to me. Anyone else read this and have any thoughts?

BookHermit Weird. That's the second book about cannibalism I've come across in the past week 💀 7y

A really excellent look at the strange saga of Alfred Packer, CO's noted cannibal. Engrossing prose & thorough research make this an exciting read for fans of true crime, non-fiction, or CO History. We also love that it draws on material from our archival collection! Http://bit.ly/22qUYLQ
