So I maybe drove 29 miles to get a limited edition library card. It's my tenth library card overall. I'm addicted to the limited edition ones this is the fourth in my collection.

Field trip to Los Angeles Public Library Central Branch! We did the free tour, photographed some art, coveted the children's section, and got a library card so we can add LA Library to Libby. On the drive up, we listened to the first couple of hours of Susan Orlean's The Library Book, so we were very aware of the locations of the sprinklers in the old section of the building.

Scochrane26 After I read the Library Book, visiting the LA library is the only reason I want to visit LA. 4y
EKonrad Hope you had a great time! Love that place! 4y
Christine I‘ve been dying to make this very trip! Well done. 4y

ImperfectCJ @Scochrane26 Far as I can tell, it's pretty much the only reason to visit LA, at least now that the Pompeii exhibit isn't at The Getty anymore. 4y
ImperfectCJ @EKonrad It's really a nice library. Symbolism everywhere! I love the escalators set up like waterfalls. And the map room! And the genealogy card catalogs! 4y
ImperfectCJ @Christine Thank you! We combined it with a trip to Medieval Times, which wasn't really any of our cup of tea but amusing to do once. 4y
Michollio I also took a trip to the LA central branch to get a library card and access their ebooks. They have access to so many books through Overdrive! 4y
ImperfectCJ @Michollio Their selection is fantastic! Makes up for San Diego City not being on Overdrive. I've been paying for access to Fairfax County (Virginia) Overdrive access to supplement SD County, but with LA, I might be able to let Fairfax lapse. Especially if I get up to San Francisco for a card there. 🤞 4y
Michollio I've been using SD County a bit for Overdrive, but I definitely use the LA one more. I rarely use city at all now because everything they due is slow and their e options aren't great 4y
ImperfectCJ @Michollio We use SD City a lot for physical library items, and we spend quite a bit of time in two of the branches especially, but I've been disappointed with their e-collection. They said their electronic resources are accessed much more now that they don't use Overdrive anymore, so maybe it's a better choice for some, just not for us. 4y
ImperfectCJ @Michollio Oh, and I will say, since I've been using Libby for Overdrive and have all of the libraries in the same place, I don't keep very good track of which library I check things out from, I just like having as many as possible. 4y
Smrloomis Wow, that‘s beautiful! 😍😍😍 4y

Littens familiar with LA:

My family and I are heading to LA for a long-delayed visit to the Central Library. We know nothing practical about LA and would love some pointers! Specifically, what cool stuff is there within walking distance from the library (~1-2 mile radius)? Cool stuff meaning sites of historical/artistic/architectural significance, or maybe a neat indie bookstore or cafe or park.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

EKonrad Don‘t miss The Last Bookstore downtown. It‘s definitely my fave bookstore ever! 😄 4y
Hooked_on_books If you haven‘t already done so, read this before you go: 4y
ImperfectCJ @Hooked_on_books I had not heard of that one, but I've been meaning to finally try something by Susan Orlean...this looks like a good one to read first, and definitely before our library visit! Thank you so much! 4y
ImperfectCJ @EKonrad Awesome! And that's really close, too! Thanks! 4y

I went on a bookish weekend in LA this weekend. Toured the LA Public Library, which houses the above beautiful chandelier. The Earth surrounded by astrological signs surrounded by a “star” for every state in the US (there were only 48 when the chandelier was made).
