Before the Wind
Before the Wind: A novel | Jim Lynch
5 posts | 5 read | 7 to read
Following The Highest Tide, Border Songs, and Truth Like the Sun, Jim Lynch now gives us a grand and idiosyncratic family saga that will stand alongside Ken Keseys Sometimes a Great Notion. Joshua Johannssen has spent all of his life surrounded by sailboats. His grandfather designed them, his father built and raced them, his Einstein-obsessed mother knows why and how they work (or not). For Josh and his two siblings, their backyard was the Puget Sound and sailing their DNA. But both his sister and brother fled many years ago: Ruby to Africa and elsewhere to do good works on land, and Bernard to god-knows-where at sea, a fugitive and pirate. Suddenly thirty-one, Joshwho repairs boats of all kinds in a Steinbeckian marina south of Seattleis pained and confused by whatever the hell went wrong with his volatile family. His parents are barely speaking, his mystified grandfather is drinking harder, and he himselfdespite an endless and comic flurry of online dateshasnt even come close to finding a girlfriend. But when the Johannssens unexpectedly reunite for the most important race in these watersall of them together on a classic vessel they made decades agothey will be carried to destinies both individual and collective, and to a heart-shattering revelation. Past and present merge seamlessly and collide surprisingly as Jim Lynch reveals a family unlike any other, with the grace and humor and magic of a master storyteller. From the Hardcover edition.

This is the book I chose for my summer book club for June. I am the Supreme High Chooser so I get to impose my will on others for 3 months. This one about a sailing family should be perfect for us. Our area is actually hosting Ensign Nationals this summer so the book will definitely be on topic.

BookishMarginalia All hail Supreme High Chooser! 2y

BEFORE THE WIND by Jim Lynch was a wonderful surprise! It's the story of a family, a very dysfunctional family, and their love of sailing. The middle child/son tells their stories both in the past and present. Everything in this family revolved around sailing at top levels, sending each of the three kids in very different directions. You'll learn a lot about sailing, but it's the family that you'll love. Full review coming soon on NovelVisits.

4.5 stars! A dysfunctional family novel set in the world of sailing...with my kind of writing (simple with dry humor and lots of "yes, that's exactly how it is" observations). Reminded me a bit of Ann Patchett's Commonwealth. Can't believe I hadn't heard of it until last week!
#1stline: Einstein wasn't a great sailor, probably not even a mediocre one.

A wonderful dysfunctional family novel centered around the world of sailing, including a thoughtful rumination on those 'high mast' Viagra adverts from last year.
