Trains and Lovers: A Novel | Alexander McCall Smith
6 posts | 12 read | 8 to read
The rocking motion of the train as it speeds along, the sound of its wheels on the rails . . . Theres something special about this form of travel that makes for easy conversation, which is just what happens to the four strangers who meet in Trains and Lovers. As they journey by rail from Edinburgh to London, the four travelers pass the time by sharing tales of trains that have changed their lives. A young, keen-eyed Scotsman recounts how he turned a friendship with a female coworker into a romance by spotting an anachronistic train in an eighteenth-century painting. An Australian woman shares how her parents fell in love and spent their life together running a railroad siding in the remote Australian Outback. A middle-aged American patron of the arts sees two young men saying goodbye in a train station and recalls his own youthful crush on another man. And a young Englishman describes how exiting his train at the wrong station allowed him to meet an intriguing woman whom he impulsively invited to dinnerand into his life. Here is Alexander McCall Smith at his most enchanting, exploring the nature of loveand trainsin a collection of romantic, intertwined stories. This eBook edition includes a Reading Group Guide.

A sweet book about 4 people who meet on a train from Edinburgh to London and their love stories. Their love stories are somehow connected to the train journey. Not what I normally read, but I liked it.

Took 2 books along on 2wk trip to UK. September by Rosamunde Pilcher which I started on the flight over & finished on flight back. Train & Lovers was my back up. Lugged it all over the country, finally started in Chicago while waiting for flight to Tulsa. Great story. Only thing that would have made it better would be reading on train to Edinburgh but since I didn't, here's a view from Edinburgh castle. #t #LitsyAtoZ @BookishMarginalia

A story of four different people/couples on a train together. They talk about life and love and all manner of things. His stories are so gentle that it can be easy to speed-read through them, and this time I took my time and was compelled to underline things - haven't underlined in at least a decade! This was my purse book for a few months, so it took longer than it should have. Between a pick and so-so but on the pick side.

I just read this in 5 hours! 4 intriguing stories of love from 4 different passengers on a train (a ride about 5 hours). Makes me miss traveling by train, and a great reminder that there's a story in every person. Sometimes the simplest coincidences can change your life. Embrace the ordinary.
