Review:
This book has black and white illustrations that follow along the text very well. If the text says something, the illustrations often say more. It has a good flow that is happy, with ups and downs, and a happy ending.
Blurb:
This book would need a bit more time to be read, but I think it would be great for k-3rd.

“The other barns in the valley usually had a bearskin nailed up to dry. But never Johnny‘s barn”. This quote allowed the reader the sympathize with Johnny and understand how it must feel to be left out.

This was a good story with a good ending. The illustrations seem like pencil drawings with blots of paint in between. I believe this book teaches children that the outcome they want may not always be what actually happens.

Award: Caldecott
Review: This book is about a little boy named Johnny Orchard. In Johnny‘s family, they hung up bear skins on their barn. However, Johnny did not like this. So, one day Johnny Orchard brings home a bear cub to prevent anyone from hanging more bear skin on the wall. This book follows Johnny and his bear as the cub grows and becomes a problem for the neighborhood and how Johnny eventually solves the problem.

Pickpick

This book is an older Caldecott winner(pub.1952). The illustrations were great and so was the setting. It was a very cute read about things not being what they may seem to be, but also about friendship. The bear and Johnnys friendship deep and caring.
It is an older type of story, but has a very good message throughout. Johnny thought that he would have to hurt the bear, but he ends up going to the zoo.
“And I'll always bring him maple sugar.“
