Rhinoceros and Other Plays: Includes: The Leader; The Future Is in Eggs; It Takes All Kinds to Make a World
Rhinoceros and Other Plays: Includes: The Leader; The Future Is in Eggs; It Takes All Kinds to Make a World | Eugene Ionesco
5 posts | 8 read | 1 to read
In "Rhinoceros, " as in his early plays, Ionesco startles audiences with a world that invariably erupts in explosive laughter and nightmare anxiety. A rhinoceros suddely apears in a small town, tramping through its peaceful streets. Soon there are two, then three, until the "movement" is universal: a transformation of average citizens into beasts, as they learn to "move with the times." Finally, only one man remains. "I'm the last man left, and I'm staying that way until the end. I'm not capitulating!"

The new pup must have been very hungry - she ate a whole rhinoceros today.
I felt I should read it before I tossed it, so read along with a production I found on YouTube, which I thought was very good and delightfully, musically odd. Fun with fascist allegory, if there is such a thing.
Well done, Charlie girl!

Aimeesue @LeahBergen It was a very old copy I got from the trash pile at the Book Sorting, so I‘m not heartbroken. Miss Charlotte has never lived in a house before and is sill tasting things to see if they‘re for dogs or not. I think we‘re now clear on the fact that books are definitely NOT for dogs. 😂 6mo

Ruthiella I know another Litten who can relate @Traci1 ! I have also lost books, letters, shoes, dog beds, towels and in one case, a baby gate to keep the pup in the kitchen, to youngster dogs! 😂🐶❤️ 6mo
LeahBergen Yep. There were a few mishaps with my Johnny, too. 😆 6mo
mabell A whole rhinoceros! That‘s impressive! 6mo
Aimeesue @Ruthiella Oh no! I guess that‘s the price of having young dogs. Worth it, but I always hope they learn quick! (edited) 6mo
Aimeesue @LeahBergen I would‘ve address him as “Johnny Rotten” at that point 😂 6mo
Aimeesue @mabell I just hope she doesn‘t go in for competitive eating, or she‘ll be chomping on my copy of The Bear and the Nightingale next! 6mo
LeahBergen He‘s actually called that a lot in this house! 😆 6mo
mabell Competitive eating 🤣🤣 6mo

Hooked_on_books Oh no, bad puppy! I am also not a stranger to dog-perpetrated book predation. Luckily, when it happened, it was only the spines, so the books were still readable. I‘m glad it was a short phase! 6mo
Aimeesue @Hooked_on_books keeping my fingers crossed! 6mo

I absolutely love Eugene Ionesco, Rhinoceros is one of my favourite plays. If you enjoy allegory, absurdism and genius philosophy you should probably read this play.
