There is nothing lonelier than a cat who has been loved, at least for a while, and then abandoned on the side of the road. A calico cat, about to have kittens, hears the lonely howl of a chained-up hound deep in the backwaters of the bayou. She dares to find him in the forest, and the hound dares to befriend this cat, this feline, this creature he is supposed to hate. They are an unlikely pair, about to become an unlikely family. Ranger urges the cat to hide underneath the porch, to raise her kittens there because Gar-Face, the man living inside the house, will surely use them as alligator bait should he find them. But they are safe in the Underneath...as long as they stay in the Underneath. Kittens, however, are notoriously curious creatures. And one kittens one moment of curiosity sets off a chain of events that is astonishing, remarkable, and enormous in its meaning. For everyone who loves Sounder, Shiloh, and The Yearling, for everyone who loves the haunting beauty of writers such as Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Flannery OConnor, and Carson McCullers, Kathi Appelt spins a harrowing yet keenly sweet tale about the power of loveand its opposite, hatethe fragility of happiness and the importance of making good on your promises.

Three day trip, this book should keep me company until tomorrow evening (Day 2) almost halfway through. We‘re all tucked and cozy in the bus. Sweet dreams 🌙✨

Finished reading this with my kids tonight. When I asked my nine year old daughter if she liked it she said, "it made me feel really sad a lot of times". And I said "yeah, but did you like it?" And she said, "I loved it."

This is a beautifully written story that is so unique in its telling. I absolutely LOVED it and reading it aloud to my kids was even better. ?????

Tamra We have this TBR, gonna have to bump it up! 6y
rachelk I miss those days! Have you ever read the Bunnicula books by Deborah Howe? 6y
vkois88 Awww that's so sweet ❤❤ 6y
toofondofbooks @rachelk we've not read those yet 6y
rachelk If you do, start with the first, ‘Bunnicula‘ - funny, clever with a bit of mystery and suspense. My daughter and I loved it. 6y

Started a new book with my kids tonight. The writing in this is beautiful. We raced through the first 10 chapters and they begged me to keep going but it was time for bed. I'm tempted to read ahead lol.

What may seem like a simple children's book is so much more. Appelt's prose is elegant and poetic.

My first #recommendsday title. This book is lyrical and beautiful; it has some harsh parts but they are worth it. Appelt uses a folklore feel to enrich the story. This book was marketed to children, but feels deeper than most children's books to me.
