The Burn
The Burn | Annie Oldham
5 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
The Burn is full of nuclear fallout, roving gangs, anarchy, unreliable plumbing. That's what Terra's father tells her. She has lived her whole life in comfort in a colony at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. She hates it. And she would pay any price to leave. But when Terra finally escapes the colony, she finds out her father is right. She finds a group of survivors that quickly become friends, and every day with them is a race for survival. But then she witnesses and commits unspeakable acts, and she must decide where her loyalty lies: with the colony she despises or The Burn, where every day is filled with nightmares.

Mehso-so

As a post-apocalyptic retelling of The Little Mermaid, this totally delivers. However, the violence of literally having her tongue removed is quite jarring (though there‘s more violence later) and I had a lot of logistical questions, like wouldn‘t she need to re-learn to eat without a tongue? This is totally personal, but I was disappointed that she leaves a sterile government-controlled dystopia and ends up in… another govt-controlled dystopia.

Clare-Dragonfly I would have preferred the Burn to be more anarchic, instead of just this group hiding from the government. The ending also kind of fell flat. This is my #bookspin for October @TheAromaofBooks 2y

So this is turning out to be a post-apocalyptic Little Mermaid. Yes, I see why I needed to have it 😂

And here‘s my #bookspinbingo card for October. My #bookspin is The Burn and my #doublespin is The Glory. I don‘t remember anything about either of them which makes them great choices for my goal of reading books that have been on my Kindle for a long time 😂
