The Road to Grantchester
The Road to Grantchester | James Runcie
6 posts | 5 read | 5 to read
The captivating prequel to the treasured Grantchester series follows the life, loves and losses of a young Sidney Chambers in post-war London It is 1938, and eighteen-year-old Sidney Chambers is dancing the quickstep with Amanda Kendall at her brother Robert's birthday party at the Caledonia Club. No one can believe, on this golden evening, that there could ever be another war. Returning to London from the war seven years later, Sidney has gained a Military Cross, and lost his best friend on the battlefields of Italy. The carefree youth that he and his friends were promised has been blown apart, just like the rest of the world and Sidney, carrying a terrible, secret guilt, must decide what to do with the rest of his life. But Sidney has heard a call: constant, though quiet, and growing ever more persistent. To the incredulity of his family and the derision of his friends the irrepressible actor Freddie, and the beautiful, spiky Amanda Sidney must now negotiate his path to God: the course of which, much like true love, never runs smooth. The touching, engaging and surprising origin story of the Grantchester Mysteries's beloved Archdeacon Sidney Chambers, The Road to Grantchester will delight new and old fans alike.

Any Grantchester fans out there? I'm a huge fan of the Masterpiece Mystery TV show, and really enjoyed this prequel to the books. I'm going to start on the book series soon.

Quite different that other Granchester novels, no mysteries to solve. Glimpse of Detective Sidney. 📺 & 📚Sidney go their separate ways later in the series, this will appeal to Fans of both. Sidney becoming Sidney in War, Peace, Faith, and Love. All the moments that make him the man he is. Insight into a beloved character. Sidney could convince me to go to Church. 🤓 #sidneychambers #bookvstv

Sidney's friend Freddie: ‘My definition of eternity is the time the bus takes to get from the railway station to my aunt‘s house in Lacock. That‘s a disappointment, let me tell you. No lays and precious few cocks.‘ 🤣🤣🤣

I met the lovely James Runcie at an event tonight for the Hillsborough Festival of Literature and Ideas.

Bright, compelling, funny, and honest, I was impressed not just by his writing but also by his humanity.

If you haven‘t read the Sidney Chambers Granchester books then you‘re in for treat. The tagged book is his most recent, and is a prequel to the series.

Prequel to the Grantchester Mysteries series, this book is a look into Sidney‘s WWII experiences and how he became an Anglican vicar. It is a completely different type of book from the rest of the series, featuring no mysteries but an enormous amount of introspection and religion. If you are new to the series, which I highly recommend, it may be best to start with book 1 and read this one last. I‘m a series fan, although not religious 4/5⭐️#2019

CarolynM I read and enjoyed the first one, but never followed up. This one sounds good, I'll look out for it. I enjoyed the TV series🙂 5y
rretzler It was good, but definitely not like the rest of the books or the TV series. It spent a lot of time in Sidney‘s head. @CarolynM (edited) 5y
