The novel that launched the astonishing career of one of the 20th century's greatest writers of action and suspense - an acclaimed classic of heroism and the sea in World War II. Now reissued in a new cover style. The story of men who rose to heroism, and then to something greater, HMS Ulysses takes its place alongside The Caine Mutiny and The Cruel Sea as one of the classic novels of the navy at war.It is the compelling story of Convoy FR77 to Murmansk - a voyage that pushes men to the limits of human endurance, crippled by enemy attack and the bitter cold of the Arctic.

Read this as a joint read with my partner. Definitely not a book I would have chosen for myself and while I struggled with the level of nautical and military detail, I was surprisingly engaged. This book gives a very realistic look at life a ship that is part of an arctic convoy during WWII. Military operations, weather conditions, and crew dynamics are all described in a lot of detail. Men pushed to their breaking points

My partner and I are doing a joint read. He lives in Norway so we are trying to be creative with our time since we can‘t travel. This is his pick (we finished Norse Mythologies last week - my pick). It‘s pretty far out of my reading comfort zone. The sheer detail about military ship operations isn‘t my favorite but the story is starting to pick up. We‘ll see...

Larkken My hubby and I have tried to do read alongs, but our reading paces are too different for it to work. I hope it works better for the two of you! 3y

MacLean's first novel, and what a read! You haven't experienced cold like these guys on the Arctic convoys in WW2. Harrowing, amusing and moving. Worth reading if you like WW2 fiction or stories about ships and their crews.
