When a Duchess Says I Do
When a Duchess Says I Do | Grace Burrowes
6 posts | 9 read
Duncan Wentworth tried his hand at rescuing a damsel in distress once long ago, and he's vowed he'll never make that mistake again. Nonetheless, when he comes across Matilda Wakefield in the poacher-infested and far-from-enchanted woods of his estate, decency compels him to offer aid to a lady fallen on hard times. Matilda is whip-smart, she can read Duncan's horrible penmanship, and when she wears his reading glasses, all Duncan can think about is naughty Latin poetry. Matilda cannot entrust her secrets to Duncan without embroiling him in the problems that sent her fleeing from London, but neither can she ignore a man who's honorable, a brilliant chess player, and maddeningly kissable. She needs to stay one step ahead of the enemies pursuing her, though she longs to fall into Duncan's arms. Duncan swears he has traded in his shining armor for a country gentleman's muddy boots, but to win the fair maid, he'll have to ride into battle one more time.

Enjoyable slow burn romance between two smart main characters who love chess and foreign languages, have independent characters, and a strong sense of right and wrong. Lovely read. Glad I picked this one up.

This story is a romance but the romance itself took me time to really dive into. The MC‘s were both highly intelligent people and this romance ended up as more of an intellectual one. Though, by the time the end was nearing I was definitely swooning over what had developed between them. Ultimately, what really grabbed my interest was the suspense and mystery surrounding Matilda! I was walking through my favourite indie book store and had to buy this paper back. Tried a matcha Frappuccino, delicious, and chicken rice noodle soup 🍲

Second in historical series, carries on the story of family unexpectedly raised to wealth. Duncan has been sent to sort out an estate that is losing money: Mattie is trying to hide, increasingly desperately. Interesting characters, suspense and plenty of romance.
