Unter der Drachenwand
Unter der Drachenwand: Roman | Arno Geiger
2 posts | 2 read

After getting injured at the Eastern front in 1943, 24-year-old Veit Kolbe falls in love with Margotwhile recovering in Austrian mountains. A year passes by and he needs to get back to the front... Horrors of war seen from the perspective of a Wermacht soldier. Captivating, profound and poetic anti-war novel.

Historically fiction set in the Austrian countryside in the last year of WWII through the eyes of an Austrian soldier that got injured in Russia and therefore was spared to participate in the war for one year only to return to the front in the last months of the war.

The narrative also included letters from people who the soldier comes in contact with during this year.

I was struck by the normalcy of life away from the front and big cities.
