Picked this up on the recommendation of a comic book shop employee a couple years ago. I was looking for something similar to Saga and this was their top rec. while not quite as sweeping or complex as Saga, it‘s really good at world building and so far I‘m enjoying learning about these characters.
Basic premise: a queen has been turned into a tiger. The queen and her bodyguard (and lover) quest to magical Isola to unravel the curse.

Recommended as something similar to SAGA.
It‘s about a queen that gets turned in to a tiger by her brother and her guard takes vengeance on her brother and he‘s the only one who can undo the spell and they both travel to the underworld to get her turned back.

I did not realize how far behind I was on my book posts. Local comic book store recommended this to me. I was skeptical at first because it isn‘t quite the snarky action that I usually read. Beautiful illustration and an interesting storyline.

This is a visually stunning comic with gorgeous art & an intriguing premise but not much of a plot. Soldier, the main character, is the captain of the guard for a queen who has been turned into a tiger. Their only hope to reverse the curse is to get to Isola, the land of the dead, but there are lots of people who don‘t want that to happen. Few of the questions are answered in this first volume. A good, but I can‘t yet say great, comic.

Picked up Isola, Vol. 1 as I continue to work through Eisner Award nominees. It‘s up for Best New Series & the only one of the five nominated comics I haven‘t read. (I‘ve only read Issue #1 of Bitter Root, which I loved, but I‘ll definitely pick up the trade when it‘s published later this month.) Death or Glory is on a lot of “Best of” lists & it‘s by Remender so I picked it up along with X-Men: Wakanda Forever because Okorafor is the writer.

GrilledCheeseSamurai I didn't care for Isola that much. The art was gorgeous but the story felt a little flat to me. It might read better in trade though? I friggen loved Death or Glory though! 👌 5y
TracyReadsBooks @GrilledCheeseSamurai I have to agree about Isola & I can‘t say it reads better in trade. It‘s a pick because the art is gorgeous. The plot, however, is definitely lacking—nothing happens. Lots of unanswered questions—in the hopes readers might keep reading?!?—and little forward momentum. Not sure I‘ll keep reading it & not at all sure about the Eisner nomination. That being said, it is a gorgeous comic. And yes, Death or Glory is fantastic! 5y
