I Am Mrs. Jesse James
I Am Mrs. Jesse James | Pat Wahler
3 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
A penny for a promise will change her life forever. For Jesse James, the war will never be over. For Zee Mimms, the war is only the beginning. The long, bloody Civil War is finally at an end when Zee Mimms, the dutiful daughter of a Missouri preacher, is tasked with nursing her cousin, Jesse James, back to health after he suffers a near-fatal wound. During Jesse's long convalescence, the couple falls in love, but Jesse's resentment against the Federals runs deep. He has scores to settle. For him, the war will never be over. Zee is torn between deferring to her parents' wishes and marrying for security or marrying for love and accepting the hard realities of life with an outlaw--living under an assumed name and forever on the run. For her, the choice she makes means the war is only beginning.

Wahler has written a lovely novel of a woman married to a troubled man; a novel that doesn't pretend to answer for him or make sense of his legacy. Instead, it focuses on this minister's daughter who fell in love with a handsome rogue who couldn't shake his penchant for danger. For good or for bad, Wahler skirts away from judging his political views and focus on the loneliness of his bride.

There's something about reading a new book. I always love the opportunity to read books with a blank slate, not knowing what to expect. It's refreshing to go into it with no expectations.  I don't want to be swayed by reviews, positive or negative, I just want it to be me and my book.

The sensory details in the opening scenes of this novel are so vivid I feel as though I'm right there with the narrator.
