Brooke and Heath should never have become friends, let alone fallen in love A year ago, Brooke Covington lost everything when her beloved older brother, Jason, confessed to the murder of his best friend, Calvin. Brooke and her family became social pariahs, broken and unable to console one another. Brookes only solace remains the ice-skating rink where she works, but she no longer lets herself dream about a future skating professionally. When Brooke encounters Calvins younger brother, Heath, on the side of the road and offers him a ride, everything changes. She needs someone to talk toand so does Heath. No one else understands what its like. Her brother, alive but gone; his brother, dead but everywhere. Soon, theyre meeting in secret, despite knowing that both families would be horrified if they found out. In the place of his anger and her guilt, something frighteningly tender begins to develop, drawing them ever closer together. But when a new secret comes out about the murder, Brooke has to choose whose pain shes willing to live withher familys or Heaths. Because she cant heal one without hurting the other.

I struggled to finish this book, the middle felt a bit meandering, but ultimately, a strong ending and solid read.

I read this for a new type of book club at my local library. It will be my first time participating in any live book club in 30 years. Not sure if it will be attended or not- But- I‘m glad I read this book that shares a complex perspective- what happens to your life when your brother kills someone? And it‘s a small town…and everyone knows your family and the person he killed family. I thought the author did a really good job with a YA version.

KaylaCReviews This sounds like a poignant read. What a horrible situation, but a thought-provoking plot. I'll have to put it on my to-read list. 2y
Chrissyreadit @KaylaCReviews yes- I thought it was fairly well done for such a tough topic. 2y

Like her previous books I loved this one too. This author always makes me feel sad & emotional while reading. I think she presents heavy themes pretty well and I liked how she handled forbidden romance in this novel.
