Touching Spirit Bear (rack) | Ben Mikaelsen
Will the attack of the Spirit Bear destroy Cole's life or save his soul? Cole Matthews has been fighting, stealing, and raising hell for years. So his punishment for beating Peter Driscal senseless is harsh. Given a choice between prison and Native American Circle Justice, Cole chooses Circle Justice: He'll spend one year in complete isolation on a remote Alaskan island. In the first days of his banishment, Cole is mauled by a mysterious white bear and nearly dies. Now there's no one left to save Cole, but Cole himself.

This is an amazing RF Napra Nautilus award winning novel. This is a great IR for the classroom. This is a story of a boy named Cole who beat up a kid terribly because he was a bully. Instead of getting jail time Cole chooses to go to a remote island and do work. He encounters a spirit bear instead of leaving it at peace he attacks it and gets mauled. He learns a lot after he leaves the island early due to injuries and returns with a new heart.

KatiaP ESOL strategy you can use is 16 integrating speaking, listening, reading and writing activities and UDL principle 6.4 enhancing capacity for monitoring progress. You can do these by giving students activities and questions after each chapter. This will help monitor how much they understand. More on the author at https://www.benmikaelsen.com/ 4y
Tabitha_H I actually read this book while I was in HighSchool it was a great book. The author website is a great resource. 4y
DrSpalding I agree with Tabatha that this may be a book for the later middle school or high school grades. Good choice nonetheless! You are consistently using the author website which is truly one of the best places to go to see how you can use their book in your classroom. 4y

For what it was, it was generally an ok story. I find myself drawn to the human conflict and growth through this story, add that up with a surprising ending I hadn‘t really seen coming I guess I was pleasantly surprised. All in all, it was ok.

I began reading Touching Spirit Bear with my 8th grade students today, and none of them even noticed my bear leggings that I wore for the occasion. I recommend this book for anyone who loves survival stories and dynamic stories of redemption, but I especially recommend it for teenage boys!

Blair_Reads Love your leggings :) 7y
