Speaking Our Truth
Speaking Our Truth: A Journey of Reconciliation | Monique Gray Smith
5 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
Canada's relationship with its Indigenous people has suffered as a result of both the residential school system and the lack of understanding of the historical and current impact of those schools. Healing and repairing that relationship requires education, awareness and increased understanding of the legacy and the impacts still being felt by survivors and their families. Guided by acclaimed Indigenous author Monique Gray Smith, readers will learn about the lives of Survivors and listen to allies who are putting the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission into action.

Very well done history of Canadian Residential Schools and today‘s efforts at reconciliation. Would be so beautiful to see the US take a similar approach to our history concerning Native people and African Americans.

This is about Canadian Residential Schools but it could very easily be about the US history. Her words are meaningful. If only the US could engage in concerted reconciliation efforts too.

This is an exploration of Canada‘s Residential Schools- mandatory schools for indigenous youth that ripped children away from their families and tried to take away their culture. At these schools at least 3,200 children died, at least 3,500 girls were sterilized, but the numbers are likely far greater. Children were emotionally, physically, and sexually abused.

The work toward reconciliation is beginning.

CouronneDhiver Only barely beginning ... but I really hope it makes significant progress very soon. 5y
BookInMyHands @CouronneDhiver There‘s an interesting essay at the end about how reconciliation can only happen once there is equality. And there isn‘t equality yet. 5y
