America's Neighborhood Bats
America's Neighborhood Bats: Understanding and Learning to Live in Harmony with Them | Merlin D. Tuttle
2 posts
Since its first publication in 1988, America's Neighborhood Bats has changed the way we look at bats by underscoring their harmless and beneficial nature. In this second revised edition, Merlin Tuttle offers bat aficionados the most up-to-date bat facts, including a wealth of new information on bat house design and current threats to bat survival.

Don't you just want to pinch those cheeks?! ? While mega bats like the flying fox are the most "sky puppy"-ish, there are over 1,400 species of bats, which accounts for 20% of all mammal species! They can be found nearly everywhere on earth, aside from the harshest desert or artic. And they are the only mammals capable of true flight (nice try, "gliding" squirrels). #batweek

CBee I love bats! We get them here at dusk and I love watching them swoop around 🦇 6mo
Amiable “CBS Sunday Morning” had a segment about bats on yesterday‘s show! 6mo
TheLudicReader Your bat posts crack me up and by that I mean 😬. My son loves bats and always wants me to admit that they are cute...which they decidedly are not. 6mo

Clare-Dragonfly Wow, 20%! I wonder why there are so many? Benefits of flight, perhaps? 6mo
bthegood love these posts (and love the “nice try -gliding squirrels“) - 🦇 6mo
TieDyeDude @Cbee We need to set up some yard furniture. I'm not sure how many are around here in AK. 6mo
TieDyeDude @amiable Thanks, I'll look for it on YouTube. I love CBS Sunday Morning! 6mo
TieDyeDude @thelucidreader At least your son has good taste! 😅 J/K. Thanks for reading anyway! 6mo
TieDyeDude @clare-dragonfly I think a lot of it is just the evolutionary adaptations for all the different environments and diets. Some species are wide ranging (little brown bats can be found throughout North America), but many are specific to fairly small regions (Bumblebee bats are found only among limestone caves along the Thailand-Myanmar border). That's why habitat destruction of even a small area could put a whole species in danger of extinction. 6mo
TieDyeDude @bthegood Thanks 😅 6mo
CBee @TieDyeDude I think they‘re out more in warmer weather as I haven‘t seen them recently. They‘re super fun to watch when I can! 6mo

If anyone is feeling generous, I'm doing a Facebook fundraiser for my birthday benefiting the Merlin Tuttle Bay Conservation. Tuttle is the founder of Bat Conservation International. Upon retiring, he just couldn't get out of the game, and, instead of forcing himself back into BCI, he started something new. He also wrote Secret Lives of Bats. Sorry if this is spammy; I'll delete if inappropriate.
