Or Else My Lady Keeps the Key
Or Else My Lady Keeps the Key | Kage Baker
4 posts | 3 read
It's 1672 in Port Royal, Jamaica. John James, London bricklayer's apprentice turned pirate, is returning from the sack of Panama with his share of the loot (a lousy 200 pieces of eight) and a resolve to go back to bricklaying, since piracy pays so badly. First, though, he has a duty: he must deliver a letter to a lady. The letter is from his dead comrade, Sir Thomas Blackstone, who was a court intriguer on a mission for Prince Rupert of the Rhine. The letter's recipient is Clarissa Waverly, Blackstone's mistress and accomplice. Before he went off to Panama, Blackstone hid four thousand pounds of the prince's money, unwilling to trust his lady friend not to make off with it in his absence. Dying of battle wounds, he wrote to let her know where he'd concealed the money.

Kage Baker‘s books are so much fun. This is just a little one. But it has ghosts, and pirates, and a trickster. It‘s a good read and, like everything of her‘s I‘ve read, you wonder what happened next.

“now, gentlemen, I shall teach you all a merry and diverting catch to pass the time.
“What? Said John.
“We are going to keep our spirits up by singing, said Mrs. Waverly, a hint of steel in her manner...Now which of you is a baritone?”
Nobody answered, And presently she warned “I‘ll start screaming...”
“I‘m a tenor!” Said Sejanus.
“I‘m a countertenor!” Said Mr. Tudeley.

NotCool When lost at sea, clinging to a capsized life boat, Mrs Waverly decides the only way to keep the sailors alive and distracted from their oncoming doom is to teach them a filthy song. I applaud her resourcefulness and perseverance. (edited) 5y

Mehso-so

💰About a guy who delivers a letter to woman as his friend‘s dying wish & gets swept in a treasure hunt.
💰Great swashbuckling action with sword fights, violent storms, shipwrecks, & ulterior motives.
💰The MC kept giving 2nd chances to someone who‘s blatantly dishonest & it was frustrating as hell.
💰Shitty character never gets their comeuppance.
💰Reads slowly.
💰Has authentic language & vocabulary of era.
💰Classic high fantasy book.
💰2.75/5
