The Colour of Milk
The Colour of Milk | Nell Leyshon

The Colour of Milk is a literary tour de force of power, class, and fate, told in the fierce, urgent voice of the irrepressible Mary, a character as indelible as The Color Purples Celie and Margaret Atwoods eponymous Alias Grace. Set in England in 1830, The Colour of Milk by Nell Leyshon is an emotionally haunting work of historical fiction hailed as charming, Bront-esque...and hard to forget (Marian Keyes) about an illiterate farm girls emotional and intellectual awakening and its devastating consequences. Mary, the spirited youngest daughter of an angry, violent man, is sent to work for the local vicar and his invalid wife. Her strange new surroundings offer unsettling challenges, including the vicars lecherous son and a manipulative fellow servant. But life in the vicarage also offers unexpected joys, as the curious young girl learns to read and write knowledge that will come at a tragic price.

The sense of foreboding in the slim book was so well done! I worried at every turn of the page. Mary is sent off by her father to work for the Vicar and help take care of his ailing wife. Although the home she left was harsh and full of backbreaking labor she laments the lack of choice she is given. I won‘t lie, this book was bleak but I thought it was really effective. #24in2024

Breakfast today was toast, banana, Nutella that I didn't want to risk putting on the toast and ruining the aesthetic with, and a book! What's your favourite meal of the day?

Didn't get a snow day, surprise surprise! Finished this during my lunch today. Quick read, but man, it is a hard one. I actually loved the writing style but it is definitely not for everyone.

Browsing books at the library I spotted this title I had heard of before but knew nothing about. But the first page made me close it and put it away (after taking a photo that is) because I don‘t think I can read a book which has no capitalization. It may be kinda anal of me but I just can‘t. I also can‘t read books with too much italics.
Does anything like that turn you off books?

dylanisreading I don't think I can read a book that has no capitalization either. 6y
Ottergirl I can be put off by lots of different changes of narrator, or jumping about in time. I had to bail on Lincoln in the Bardo because of all the quotes at the beginning 6y
inmegslibrary I can‘t handle no punctuation 😖 6y

PenguinInFlight I am a hardcore grammar nerd, so it would probably cause me to twitch and foam at the mouth, LOL. 😂 I think that‘s why I don‘t enjoy most poetry, now that I think about it, because it tends not to follow grammatical rules. 6y
Andrew65 No I definitely couldn‘t read this! 6y
xicanti I need punctuation. Otherwise, I edit the book in my head as I read and I struggle to sink into the story. 6y
swynn This would not be a deal breaker for me if I felt there were a point. My only question would be, why? 6y
readordierachel This would throw me too. And too many italics! It was one of the reasons I didn't like Night Film by Marisha Pessl. So many random italics. 6y

In 1830, a 15 year old farm girl is sent by her father to work as servant for a local married vicar. The story is told through her journal in a simple distinctive voice. Spare writing. Small book that packs a big punch. The tension builds, but I did not foresee the ending. Wow!

I'm at University of Delaware for the high school swimming championships. Trying to start this Book Club read amidst the booming noise level is not an easy feat! 😉🏊🏻

Lacythebookworm I have a copy of this one. Eager to hear your thoughts! 😊 7y
DivineDiana @Lacythebookworm Simple, stark writing. Starting to draw me in but I feel that a great deal of darkness is forthcoming. Let you know what I think when finished! 7y
