In this twisted Lauren Oliver-meets-A.S. King debut, Julian has just eight more lives to burn in order to uncover a brutal secret. In an alternate world startlingly close to our own, humans have nine livesand they cant wait to use them up. The government has death incentives aimed at controlling overpopulation. As you shed lives, you shed your awkward phases: one death is equal to one physical and mental upgrade. Julians friends are obsessed with the idea of burning, but Julian is determined to stay on his first life for as long as he can. His mother burned too fast and inflicted a debilitating rebirth sickness on herself. Julian realizes that hes going to have to burn at some pointespecially when he becomes a target for Nicholas, the manipulative leader of the Burners, the schools suicide club. And when Julian eventually succumbs, he uncovers suspicious gaps in the rebirth system that may explain exactly why his mother went so far down the rabbit hole years ago. Along with a group of student dissenters, Julian sets out to find answers and is soon on the verge of exposing the greatest conspiracy ever unleashed on the world.

Mehso-so

This book is a bit on the fence for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the unique plot device and setting of Nine, but it was lacking in a few areas, mainly being, backstory. The book places us right into this world, which is fine, but at no point is it explained how this world came to be, it‘s only hinted at. Other than that and a few plot holes, this book did keep me reading for about a month. There‘s really no need for a sequel, but a prequel fits well.

MrsBabki Well thought out response. I like how I you think. I wondered about reading this one - I might skip it. 4y

Pickpick

This book was an action and adventure thriller. As soon as I opened the book it caught my attention. This book had lots of twists and turns.

Cfischbuch I‘m glad you liked it. It was too much for me. (I‘m a wimp - but I know it.) 5y

Meh....strong beginning. Pacing was off. I just wasn't feeling it. Some parts dragged and some parts were overdramatic. The concept was unique but execution was lacking.

Pickpick

The main character would be worthy of my friendship because he used up 2 of his lives so he could get his house score up so they didn‘t get kicked out; he will do anything for his family

I am loving this book, it‘s a mystery, puzzle book where people have 9 lives. Some people “burn” their lives, others need rewards for shredding their extra lives. The protagonist finds out that the rebirth lake has a failure happening. So now they have to find out what is causing these prermadeaths.

#LitsyWalkers @kaye
This is my hiding spot at work. For about 10 years now, I will walk this little spot and occasionally up the stairs while reading a book if my joints are up for it. 1 lap around the back is 30 steps. I'm trying to get back into walking before work and while on breaks. It's too cold outside so I am grateful for my secret staircase and fear the day it will be taken from me. Lol I've been a loyal fitbit user and play pokemon go.

rockpools Secret staircases are goood! We used to have one at work, which was filled with hiding librarians every lunchtime... then the students found it 😱 5y
