Making Shapely Fiction
Making Shapely Fiction | Jerome Stern
2 posts | 2 read
A deft analysis and appreciation of fictionwhat makes it work and what can make it fail. Here is a book about the craft of writing fiction that is thoroughly useful from the first to the last pagewhether the reader is a beginner, a seasoned writer, or a teacher of writing. You will see how a work takes form and shape once you grasp the principles of momentum, tension, and immediacy. "Tension," Stern says, "is the mother of fiction. When tension and immediacy combine, the story begins." Dialogue and action, beginnings and endings, the true meaning of "write what you know," and a memorable listing of don'ts for fiction writers are all covered. A special section features an Alphabet for Writers: entries range from Accuracy to Zigzag, with enlightening comments about such matters as Cliffhangers, Point of View, Irony, and Transitions.

@jmofo I have this one on my kindle. This has a few pages on each of its entries. This is more of a reference and we all bought it and never had to read it, so we just didn‘t. We had more fun writing...even if my teacher commented on my attempt at fantasy with “This isn‘t realistic. This could never happen in the real world.” lol

GingerAntics Oh wow, my teacher actually has at least two books/collections on here. Eek. lol 6y
jmofo 😄 6y
GingerAntics @jmofo I have this one as an ebook. I may have to see if any of the entries are helpful at this point. It didn‘t seem to help with any of our writing assignments at the time. 6y
jmofo @GingerAntics the title is a little... suggestive? I might see if it‘s a library offering. 6y
GingerAntics @jmofo ROTFL then you should see the brief entry on writing about sex. 🤣😂🤣 6y
