Maggie Boylan

Set in Appalachian Ohio amid an epidemic of prescription opiate abuse, Michael Hensons linked collection tells of a womans search for her own peculiar kind of redemption, and brings the novel-in-stories form to new heights. Maggie Boylan is an addict, thief, liar, and hustler. But she is also a woman of deep compassion and resilience. The stories follow Maggie as she spirals through her addictive process, through the court system and treatment, and into a shaky new beginning. In these masterful stories, we rarely occupy Maggies perspective, but instead gain a multilayered portrait of a community as we see other peoples lives bump up against hersand we witness her inserting herself into their spheres, refusing to be rebuffed. The result is a prismatic view of a community fighting to stay upright against the headwinds of a drug epidemic: always on edge, always human.

Absolutely loved this short but incredibly punchy book from @BookNAround #newyearwhodis list. Short stories, each from the perspective of a different person in a small community blighted by opioid addiction, come together to provide Maggie‘s story. It‘s not a long read but had huge emotional impact. With few words the author paints a compelling and disturbing picture. Would never have found this myself so grateful for this challenge!

Cinfhen All these matches seem to be perfect!!! I haven‘t seen anyone NOT enjoy the other‘s book 💞💞💞 5y
BookNAround I am so glad you enjoyed this one. It‘s kind of a hard sell when I tell others they absolutely need to read it. 5y
monalyisha Great review! Adding it to my TBR! Thanks @Itchyfeetreader & @BookNAround! (And thanks for noticing, @Cinfhen 😉💖) 5y
Cinfhen I think you should be a matchmaker @monalyisha 💕💕 people pay big bucks for the right service😂😂 5y
Itchyfeetreader @booknaround so glad I picked it from the list - it‘s both empathetic and clever at the same time. @monalyisha you have done a great job. I have the list open with my library catalogue looking for my next pick! 5y

My next book is short, but it is an important read, as I live in an area that is especially hard hit by the opioid epidemic.

BookNAround I loved this book. I‘m glad it‘s getting a steady readership. 5y

I think this book mail arrived at the front door yesterday but we only discovered it this morning. It‘s a bit of a hodgepodge. The tagged book is for the annual book club holiday luncheon where we exchange a book we loved but did not read with the group. Winter Garden is a book club book. The Fated Sky is the sequel to The Calculating Stars, which I just read and loved. 👇🏼

BookNAround The Spinster and the Rake is because I just wanted some romance. 5y

Pickpick

The opioid crisis is touching every part of America. It has been an issue in the region in which I was born and still live. The stories Ive heard here locally and the lives affected by this crisis is overwhelming and heartbreaking. Perhaps my connection to this crisis is why I enjoyed Maggie Boylan as much as I did. I can‘t praise this work enough, it felt real to me. This small collection of interconnected stories was bleak but hopeful at times.

My #currentread
It‘s bleak and it‘s slim. It‘s a collection of interconnected stories about the title character, Maggie Boylan. It takes place in the region I‘m from and where I still live. These pages hold scenes I recognize from Appalachian Ohio.

BookNAround I just finished this one. Bleak but beautifully done. 6y
Chelsea.Poole @BookNAround I agree. This book isn‘t very well known. I feel like it deserves to be out there more. Are you from the area? 6y
BookNAround @Chelsea.Poole I have lived in Ohio several times over the years but never in Appalachia. I found the book thanks to a committee I‘m on. And I agree, it should definitely be better known. 6y
Chelsea.Poole @BookNAround Nice! Hopefully your committee can help Maggie get recognized by a larger audience. 6y

I‘ll eventually get to my #makemereadit pile but I have a few other obligations first, including this one. About the opioid crisis in Appalachia, this should be a tough read but I‘ve been told it‘s a good and thought provoking one too. (Sugar is unfortunately the drug I‘m addicted to.)
