The One-Eyed Man
The One-Eyed Man: A Fugue, With Winds and Accompaniment | L. E. Modesitt, Jr.

The colony world of Stittara is no ordinary planet. For the interstellar Unity of the Ceylesian Arm, Stittara is the primary source of anagathics: drugs that have more than doubled the human life span. But the ecological balance that makes anagathics possible on Stittara is fragile, and the Unity government has a vital interest in making sure the flow of longevity drugs remains uninterrupted, even if it means uprooting the human settlements. Offered the job of assessing the ecological impact of the human presence on Stittara, freelance consultant Dr. Paulo Verano jumps at the chance to escape the ruin of his personal life. He gets far more than he bargained for: Stittara's atmosphere is populated with skytubesgigantic, mysterious airborne organisms that drift like clouds above the surface of the planet. Their exact nature has eluded humanity for centuries, but Verano believes his conclusions about Stittara may hinge on understanding the skytubes' role in the planet's ecologyif he survives the hurricane winds, distrustful settlers, and secret agendas that impede his investigation at every turn. How to describe this book?!? I‘m going to go with ecological archaeological science fiction thriller. In other words, it has just about every cool thing. I really enjoyed it & can see why my mom did too. So...Paulo Verano travels to distant Stittara to conduct an ecological survey of the plant. While everything looks just as it should, he has his doubts & when accidents, “near misses,” start happening, he knows he‘s right. A quick, fun read.

Tamra Wow, that‘s quite the genre! 6y

My son left his 5:30am “time to wake up for school alarm” on this morning. He turned it off and promptly rolled over and went back to sleep! I, of course, did not. I‘ll have to thank him for the extra reading time when he wakes up!

Next up, a gift from my mom. A shout out to my mom too—she‘s become quite the adventurous reader, venturing far outside her comfort zone or usual genres with some frequency. Case in point, this book. Science fiction is not her usual thing, though it‘s definitely one of mine, but she read it and loved it and is waiting for me to read it so we can talk about it. Here goes!

Today‘s Grab-n-Go book and a morning treat.

sloanghost What is that tasty looking object 6y
TracyReadsBooks @solanghost Oh man, it is delicious. It‘s a scone made with buckwheat with sage and honey and likely other delicious things I‘m not remembering. If you‘re ever in Chicago, head to Loba Pastry & Coffee—everything is baked in house daily and it‘s ALL good! 6y

A gift from my fabulous mom who said, as I read the back of the book, “I have eclectic tastes.” True enough. Adventurous, eclectic reading is the best reading. Excited to add this one to the TBR pile.
