Farewell, I'm Bound to Leave You
Farewell, I'm Bound to Leave You: Stories | Fred Chappell
4 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
Farewell, I'm Bound to Leave You is rich with the music of the Southern mountains and the stories of their people. In this novel from acclaimed author Fred Chappell, Jess Kirkman's grandmother is dying, and Jess remembers the tales she and his mother have passed down to him--a chorus of women's voices that sing and share and celebrate the common song of life.

The most beautiful description of dusk I‘ve read in a while…Fred Chappell was a poet, first and foremost.

#Paradise, in my world, includes sitting on the deck of a home in the mountains with a long range view, a glass of wine, and a stack of books. Specifically, I love the Southern Appalachians (followed closely by the Blue Ridge Mtns). Fred Chappell writes about the area with such beauty and grace, and draws his characters with loving detail as well as a touch of humor, that I'm always transported to that place. #LyricalApril

Cinfhen This author is new to me but sounds wonderful...stacked! 7y
LauraBeth This is my version of paradise as well 😀 And Fred Chappell is a treasure! 💕 7y
cathysaid @Cinfhen My favorite is Brighten the Corner Where You Are but everything he writes is wonderful. 7y

lynneamch Thanks for the rec. I've enjoyed reading Appalachia-themed fiction since moving to the area a few years ago. I'll add this author to Ann Pancake, Wiley Cash, and Ron Rash. Any pts? 7y
lynneamch Any others? 7y
cathysaid @lynneamch Ann Pancake is a new one for me! Lee Smith, Clyde Edgerton, Charles Frazier, Robert Morgan are a few I can think of right now. Though to be honest, I often get strictly Appalachian lit mixed up in my head with Southern lit 😁 There's one author I think I'm forgetting, but if I think of it I'll let you know! 7y
lynneamch Great list. Thanks. That should keep me busy for a while! 7y

Pickpick

My #recommendsday pick is a trio of books (including Brighten the Corner Where You Are) set in 1940s Appalachia. Chappell captures Appalachia's voice with pitch perfect storytelling. Funny, witty, tender.
