From Unseen Fire
From Unseen Fire | Cass Morris
From Unseen Fire is the first novel in the Aven Cycle, a historical fantasy set in an alternate Rome, by debut author Cass Morris The Dictator is dead; long live the Republic. But whose Republic will it be? Senators, generals, and elemental mages vie for the power to shape the future of the city of Aven. Latona of the Vitelliae, a mage of Spirit and Fire, has suppressed her phenomenal talents for fear they would draw unwanted attention from unscrupulous men. Now that the Dictator who threatened her family is gone, she may have an opportunity to seize a greater destiny as a protector of the peopleif only she can find the courage to try. Her siblingsa widow who conceals a canny political mind in the guise of a frivolous socialite, a young prophetess learning to navigate a treacherous world, and a military tribune leading a dangerous expedition in the province of Iberiawill be her allies as she builds a place for herself in this new world, against the objections of their father, her husband, and the strictures of Aventan society. Latonas path intersects with that of Sempronius Tarren, an ambitious senator harboring a dangerous secret. Sacred law dictates that no mage may hold high office, but Sempronius, a Shadow mage who has kept his abilities a life-long secret, intends to do just that. As rebellion brews in the provinces, Sempronius must outwit the ruthless leader of the opposing Senate faction to claim the political and military power he needs to secure a glorious future for Aven and his own place in history. As politics draw them together and romance blossoms between them, Latona and Sempronius will use wit, charm, and magic to shape Avens fate. But when their foes resort to brutal violence and foul sorcery, will their efforts be enough to save the Republic they love?

Pickpick

While obviously a first novel, this is the book #GRRM should read! It shows historical “realities” without glorifying rape and torture. Finally, a book about men and women in power, their political intrigue, and the consequences of personal vendettas on a nation where women can and will use their limited power for themselves and their families. 4/5 stars, read if you like #GoT, but demand less rape. Set in Ancient Rome with gods granted magic.

Leftcoastzen Awww 🥰 so beautiful! 🐶 5y
iread2much Also like stupid GRRM, the author leaves off on a cliff hanger and hasn‘t even started on the second book. 😡 but it ends well, even if the shifting narratives where very irritating and I really wanted to focus on Latona, it is a great real politic novel; set in a well imagined world, with limited magic that doesn‘t make everything easier. 5y

Leftcoastzen Sounds like an interesting read. 5y
iread2much And this book is all about women using their power and trying to navigate the gifts from the gods. The main character is constantly told to control her power, is feared for her power, abused for her power, and must decide how and if to use it. So amazing it‘ll find that story finally written. I wish this book got as much coverage as GoT 5y
iread2much @Leftcoastzen it was! The first few chapters are a slog, but they get better as the book progresses. I really enjoyed it and I hope to see what you think if you read it 😄 5y

OMG thank you so much @Avanders I‘m so excited for this book, my cool new cards and my reading log. Thanks for the selection of teas (perfect for work!) and my yummy chocolate! I HAVE to know, where did you get the Lisa Frank stickers??

Avanders Yay!! 🥰♥️😍 you‘re welcome! As for the stickers... 😬 I don‘t remember! Walmart? Target? Amazon? Hobby Lobby? Those are the 4 most likely sources. 😁🤷🏽‍♀️😁 5y
iread2much @Avanders thanks! I have this thing with one of my research partners and at every conference we wear Lisa Frank stickers on our badges, so I‘m always looking for a new source 😄 5y

Mehso-so

Pacing was bumpy and while the characters had interesting backstories, they were also a bit flat.

“Earth supports, Air directs; Water nourishes, Fire protects; Spirit inspires, Light reveals; Time measures, Shadow conceals; Fracture marks the lines between; Thus do all the Nine convene”

Enjoyed the blurb anyway 😊

Huh...not horrible but the pacing was all over the place and the ending...I know it's a series but that was hella unsatisfying

1. I think a Book Riot article? And then I had to wait because I'm an Android user.
2. Goodreads, a Google spreadsheet and a written journal.
3. Yes, of course! But I'm an easy sell!
4. Hoping to finish up Rage and From Unseen Fire while I do a little computer work (catching up on Edelweiss reviews for @FountainBookstore newsletter- I haven't forgotten!).

Really enjoying this fantasy set in Aven (which would be ancient Rome with magic). I could do with more magic in my every day.
