Bug Jack Barron
Bug Jack Barron | Norman Spinrad
2 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Lover and hero Jack Barron, the sold-out media god of the Bug Jack Barron Show, has one last chance to hit it big when he meets Benedict Howards, the power-mad man with the secret to immortality. With over a hundred million viewers, Jack Barron is a media star of the highest celebrity—think Jerry Springer crossed with Ted Koppel—and his call-in talk show is the perfect platform for reform. But every man has his price, and when a cryogenics millionaire makes Jack an offer he can't refuse—immortality—anything can happen. Bug Jack Barron, Norman Spinrad’s fourth novel, was first published in 1969, and is commonly acknowledged to be the book that established Spinrad’s brilliant style and made his name. Its exploration of the timeless and universally relevant theme of big business corrupting democratic process, stands out now as an unforgettable and bitingly satirical work of imagination that remains as relevant as ever to today’s television and media obsessed culture.

Today's reading

RamsFan1963 I had a hard time with this one. I know it's written in a different time, but the language was a big turn off for me. 2y
SpaceCowboyBooks @RamsFan1963 Yes, I know what you mean. I think he was going for a Lenny Bruce type of approach. But it is rough in that regard. 2y

Ugggh!! I am so mad I wasted so much time on this book, it was a very hard read, like the author was on speed, every sentence just piled on top of the next, no comma, no period, like a stream of thought for every character. Also, not one redeeming character in the book, either total self absorbed a-holes or total utter bastards.
I won't even get into the multiple racial slurs. 1 💥 out of 5

tournevis That's not the easiest Spinrad, even if you like him. His shorted pieces are easier. 6y
tournevis Also, the cover. 😬 6y
RamsFan1963 @tournevis Yeah that's why I put the "read" over the girl's bare breasts. It was either that or pixelate it, I didn't want to offend anyone. 6y
