This is my second McCullers and it did not disappoint, although I'm not a frequent reader of short stories. This prose is intense, it's atmospheric, it's quotidian but it's raw. If you enjoy stories about people, love and life, this is for you!
I'm looking forward to reading her 'The Member of the Wedding' next!

vivastory Excellent review. I'm slowly savoring her work, as there's not a lot of it 6y
ephemeralwaltz @vivastory sadly true. 'Reflections in a Golden Eye' completely blew me away! What's been your last read by her? 6y
vivastory Reflections in a Golden Eye. I've also read The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. One of my favorite books of all time. 6y
ephemeralwaltz @vivastory that's great to hear! I'm looking forward to it. 6y

"There were those who would have courted her, but Miss Amelia cared nothing for the love of men and was a solitary person. Her marriage had been unlike any other marriage ever contracted in this county—it was a strange and dangerous marriage, lasting only ten days, that left the whole town wondering and shocked."

Loneliness, isolation, love and betrayal. Southern gothic at its very finest. What's not to love? #Recommendsday

BookBabe You talked me into it! 8y

I read this quite a few years ago, but the vulnerability of loneliness still resonates with me now. As the title suggests, it's a sad novella, but it also reflects how humans can transform when there is hope.

teebe Love Carson McCullers! Her writing was exquisite. 8y

Mehso-so

I was disappointed by this since Mcullers came highly recommended by a friend. I couldn't seem to crack the shell to get inside the stories to get engaged and feel the way I thought I should be feeling while reading. I thought this would be a good intro before Heart is a Lonely Hunter. Now unsure.

autumnprivett I too was not as thrilled by these. I read Lonely Hunter first and loved it. She actually wrote LH first and it is a completely different caliber. 8y
Bookgirl I'm the opposite of @autumnprivett liked this and couldn't even get through Lonely Hunter. 8y
Demanda The Heart is a Lonely Hunter is one of my all time favorites. You should give it a shot! 8y
squarepeginroundhole @autumnprivett @Demanda thx I will keep it on my TBR. 8y

It feels like nothing has changed since the time McCullers wrote this. And that saddens me. Greatly.
