If you‘ve ever sung in a choir, or enjoy listening to choral music, or actually any music, this book has so many insights. It is beautifully written, and while it‘s part memoir, it also talks about music history and the psychology of music. I can‘t think of the last time I flew through a nonfiction book this quickly. I really don‘t care for it. There‘s something about the combination of the author‘s matter-of-fact tone and that she thinks religious beliefs are absurd, despite singing in a church choir, that is off-putting for me. I don‘t care that she doesn‘t have religious beliefs, but I do care that she‘s publicly disparaging to others‘ sources of comfort. Just so we‘re clear, if she was religious and being dismissive of atheists I‘d have the same problem.
