Working the Room
Working the Room: Essays and Reviews: 1999-2010 | Geoff Dyer
4 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Alive with insight, wit and Dyer's characteristic irreverence, this collection of essays offers a guide around the cultural maze, mapping a route through the worlds of literature, art, photography and music. Besides exploring what it is that makes great art great, Working the Room ventures into more personal territory with extensive autobiographical pieces - 'On Being an Only Child', 'Sacked' and 'Reader's Block', among other gems. Dyer's breadth of vision and generosity of spirit combine to form a manual for ways of being in - and seeing - the world today.

A great book to dip in and out of. I love the idiosyncrasy and deep knowledge (but unpretentious) which enriches the essays. The 'visuals' essays a highlight and 2004 Olympics aka 'a great festival of Eros' had me laughing out loud.

"Writing often works best when you are oblivious to it, when you respond to its effects without being conscious of how they are achieved." = why I love Haruki murakami and Stefan Zweig and couldn't finish The Goldfinch...

"The carefully drilled Nuremberg rallies were frightening demonstrations of the way that a people could abandon the cherished ideals of the Enlightenment and plunge, willingly, into the darkness of the herd-instinct."
