Around India in 80 Trains
Around India in 80 Trains | Monisha Rajesh
8 posts | 6 read | 6 to read
In 1991, Monisha?s family uprooted from Sheffield to Madras in the hope of making India their home. Two years later, fed up with soap-eating rats, stolen human hearts and the creepy colonel across the road, they returned to England with a bitter taste in their mouths. Twenty years later, Monisha came back. Taking a page out of Jules Verne?s classic tale, Around the World in 80 Days, she embarked on a 40,000km adventure around India in 80 trains. Travelling a distance equivalent to the circumference of the Earth, she lifted the veil on a country that had become a stranger to her. As one of the largest civilian employers in the world, featuring luxury trains, toy trains, Mumbai's infamous commuter trains and even a hospital on wheels, Indian Railways had more than a few stories to tell. On the way, Monisha met a colourful cast of characters with epic stories of their own. But with a self-confessed militant atheist as her photographer, Monisha's personal journey around a country built on religion was not quite what she bargained for... Around India in 80 Trains is a story of adventure and drama infused with sparkling wit and humour.

Mehso-so

I loved the premise behind the book: a train journey around India. However, I didn't care for the writing style. The descriptions were interesting but didn't provide much insight.

It's appropriate that the book is about travel, as this copy happens to be a travelling #BookCrossing book that a fellow BookCrosser sent to me.

Librarybelle That‘s a shame about the writing style! I enjoy books like these - traveling vicariously through the author‘s narration. 2y

Pickpick

This was a new genre for me with a new author and I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this book. If you‘re ever embarking on a train journey through India this is the book you need to read

Over a banana lassi, we watched as scores of teenagers ran through the streets flinging colours in the air, heralding the change of season when new shoots grew, buds burst open and winter was forgotten.

Armchair travelling with Monisha Rajesh.

Phileas Fogg only decides to embark on his journey after reading an article in The Daily Telegraph announcing that a section of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway has been opened....

I saw the author of this book at Cheltenham Literature Festival last week, talking about her new book, Around the World In 80 Trains. I ended up buying both books, they may inspire me to finally get my bum into gear and sort out a trip to my father‘s birthplace in India! Meanwhile, we have gorgeous sunshine and mild temperatures today, a bit of an #IndianSummer!
