5 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
THE DARK FRIGATEWinner of the Newbery Medal. In seventeenth-century England, a terrible accident forces orphaned Philip Marsham to flee London in fear for his life. Bred to the sea, he signs on with the Rose of Devon, a dark frigate bound for the quiet shores of Newfoundland. Philips bold spirit and knowledge of the sea soon win him his captains regard. But when the Rose of Devon is seized in midocean by a devious group of men plucked from a floating wreck, Philip is forced to accompany these gentlemen of fortune on their murderous expeditions. Like it or not, Philip Marsham is now a piratewith only the hangman awaiting his return to England. With its bloody battles, brutal buccaneers, and bold, spirited hero, this rousing tale will enthrall readers in search of seafaring adventure. No one, we think, has written so perfect a pirate tale since Treasure IslandNew York Herald Tribune

Pickpick

Historical fiction isn‘t really my thing but the promise of pirates on the cover had me all in. Despite being for younger readers this doesn‘t shy away from using more archaic word choices and vocabulary that borders on jargon for sailors. It was kind of a slow start before the piracy but I did enjoy it overall.

It‘s another double reading buddy day. This time it‘s the all girls version. I‘m finding the tagged interesting although I was promised pirates on the cover and it‘s been a slow burn to even get to sea.

Heading into my next Newbery pick this morning. This edition has an intro by Lloyd Alexander which is fun since The Chronicles of Prydain is one of my favorite series.

Chrissyreadit I LOVE LOVE LOVE The Chronicles of Prydain. Also we have cats that look a lot alike. Is yours part Maine coon? 2y
HeyT @Chrissyreadit she‘s actually on the small side for a cat so I doubt she‘s part Maine Coon (unless it‘s like a drop) but we used to have two that were and they were the best! 2y

Mehso-so

An early Newberry award winner and, you can tell, it is dated. Phillip Marsham is orphaned and is forced to go on the run when he has an accident with a gun. He falls in with some questionable types and has adventures.

A hard read because of the terminology and language. I think kids today would have a hard time reading this. #Newberychallege

Sorry to miss the #24in48 this weekend. Good luck, everyone. But I spent the past 2 days sending my oldest off for a semester abroad in Italy. Tonight, though, I will try to avoid being “worried mom” by diving into this #Newbery award winner.

Bklover My kids are 31, 29 and 17. I don‘t think we ever get finished being worried mom! A semester in Italy sounds amazing though!!! 6y
Cinfhen I agree with @Bklover that's a mother's job! But studying in Italy sounds awesome ❤️ 6y
youngreadrshelf @Bklover @Cinfhen thanks. It does sound amazing! 6y
Readerann This was one of my favorite Newberys. And I do think reading helps with the mom worries (my kids studied abroad in France and East Africa). Hope your son/daughter has a wonderful experience! 6y
youngreadrshelf @Readerann thanks. Oldest child so all the new feels. (1st to school, driver‘s license, etc.) 6y
