The beginning is great, and a must read for all #teachersoflitsy. , It outlines why children underachieve and how you can reach them based on their needs and reasons for this. However, parts of the second half fall into the pattern of “teacher as savior” and don‘t always account for cultural differences between the teacher and his students. Overall, it is well worth your time.

Tjackson ❤️❤️❤️ this book and everything Jim writes and says!!! 6y

Understanding the difference between self image and self-esteem is important.

There is a difference between motivating us to learn and just trying to get us to improve our standardized test scores. I‘m sure many students feel this way!

Great questions to ask!!!!

Lauren_reading This is awesome! I‘d love to rework this for primary kids. It‘s so nice to know what they‘re most concerned and then you can be a better teacher! 6y
Tjackson @LaurenReads He wrote another book called Growing Good Kids. It is full of great activities for elementary students that supports his message in this book. 6y
Lauren_reading @Tjackson Thanks! I‘m looking it up now 😀 6y
Tjackson @LaurenReads My pleasure! 6y

This is going by to be a good read!!!!

DrexEdit I volunteer to be a judge every year for History Day. I can't recommend it enough. These kids know their topics inside and out and even the shy ones can't wait to tell you all about them. History Day gives me warm fuzzies because I know there's plenty of super smart kids out there who've just learned all about facts and researching and have done a TON of reading! 😊 6y
Tjackson @DrexEdit I totally agree!!! NHD is a requirement on my GT magnet schools and the kids ❤️❤️❤️ it!!! 6y

I meant to read this last month, but I‘m just now getting around to it. The author is one of my favorite experts and gifted education and I think I‘m going to have a snow day tomorrow. I think it‘ll be a great way to spend my snow day.

mcipher OMG THIS IS MY KID! Sorry for yelling - I just never see stuff about smart kids who fail at school despite all the advantages. It‘s really tough. 😢 6y
Tjackson @mcipher There is a lot of research out there on this topic, but run out and buy this one!! I ❤️ Jim and his work! 6y
Lauredhel How good is it on gifted children with learning disabilities and/or neurodiverse kids? 6y

Tjackson @Lauredhel I haven‘t read enough to know, but I would anticipate that it‘s not going to be that specific for twice exceptional learners. I would say check out Dr. Susan Baum‘s books. 6y
CoffeeK8 I have this waiting on my tbr! It looks fascinating! 6y
Tjackson @CoffeeK8 He spoke at a meeting last month and it is fascinating. 6y
CoffeeK8 @Tjackson I can imagine. Our county PD person is looking to get him for next year. 6y
Tjackson @CoffeeK8 I hope it works out! 6y

Today I had the pleasure of hearing the author, Jim Delisle, speak on this topic and about gifted children. He is always an inspiration and I am so fortunate to have had a lot of time talking to him one on one today. Today was a good day!

Chrissyreadit How was the book? Our gifted kids are a significantly misunderstood and under supported group. 6y
Tjackson @Chrissyreadit I just started reading it. However, everything Jim writes is wonderful. Having served gifted students for 20+ years, I would like to think we‘re making progress with helping to understand them and are unique needs, but I feel like I have the same conversations and provide the same training year after year. I‘m trying to finish in the next week and I‘ll post a review. 6y
Chrissyreadit @Tjackson I work in a clinic and focus on behavior Support. I often see children who I am certain are gifted but not identified. Because we live in an impoverished area even the services for gifted are sad. I can‘t imagine if I had to go through this type of education ( I homeschool for this reason). 6y

Chrissyreadit @Tjackson I would love sources to read and keep in my office- any suggestions? One topic I frequently work with are overexcitabilities. 6y
Tjackson @Chrissyreadit Unmasking the Gift by Paul Slocumb is about GT and poverty... one of my favorite books ever. Jim‘s Survival Guides for Gifted Teens is another amazing book. Susan Baum has several books on Twice-exceptional learners that are wonderful. 6y
Chrissyreadit @Tjackson perfect- thanks! 6y

Squeezing in a little reading time… That is work related… Before I go to a meeting where the author is speaking today. I am a super fan of him and his work and have been for years. So far, I really like this book. I have a feeling I will be recommending it to parents and educators, but I need to read it all first.

CoffeeK8 This sounds fascinating! 6y

Parents and educators may want to check this book out. I am a fan of the author and get to hear him (again) this week. Looking forward to reading this book in the next couple of days.
