The Story of The Great British Bake Off
The Story of The Great British Bake Off | Anita Singh
5 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
Take one tent. Fill with 12 amateur bakers. Garnish with one venerable cookery writer, one blue-eyed bread-maker, and two comedy queens with a love of innuendo. And there you have the recipe for the most popular show of our times. When The Great British Bake Off made its debut in August 2010, it had the makings of a modest hit. But nobody not the programme-makers and certainly not those first contestants could have predicted what was to come. Here was a show in which the biggest weekly drama was whether or not a sponge cake would sink in the middle. And oh, how we loved it. Here is the ultimate Bake Off fan book: from bread lion to bin-gate; heart throbs to Twitter trolls; soggy bottoms to sticky buns. This is the celebration of Britain's most popular cookery contest.

Mehso-so

This was such a colorful, lovely behind the scenes read! My main issue, and why it‘s only so-so, is that Singh didn‘t do any interviewing herself. It‘s clear she just read articles, watched videos, and then compiled all the info together to make this book. It‘s well written & she makes her tone fit the tone of the show, but it‘s nothing I couldn‘t find out on my own with some Googling. But I‘m glad I read it & fans of the show will enjoy it!

Pickpick

Recalling the first seven series of the show, this book is the perfect way to tide yourself over in between seasons of Bake Off. There are some cool little illustrations inside, as well as behind the scenes tidbits about how the show began, casting and more. A fun little read!

Prairiegirl_reading I‘m currently obsessed with this show, the Canadian version and the JVN podcast with Nancy (winner of season 5) and her instagram because I listened to that podcast. 🤣🤣🤣 4y
xxjenadanxx @Prairiegirl_reading ooh there is a Canadian version? I need to find it. I have a weird obsession with Canada/Canadian tv! I'll have to listen to the podcast too! 4y
Prairiegirl_reading @xxjenadanxx yes and the first season was hosted by Dan Levy from Schitt‘s Creek. 4y

StayCurious Love this show! 5y
TheEllieMo @StayCurious it‘s one of the few TV shows I watch 5y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I would watch this - Sandi and Noel as hosts of a cooking/baking show still seems like a random but brilliant choice 5y
CarolynM Can't wait til we see it, probably early next year 5y

This book is as lovely as curling up to watch an episode. Watching Mary and Paul talking about pastry has become such a comfort ritual for me, and the book captures the warm whimsy.
