Got a big stack of graphic novels at the library yesterday. Next up, The Hunting Accident.

When Charlie Rizzo's mother died, he is sent to Chicago to live with his blind father. As he grows up, he gets in trouble with the law. His father opens up about his own experience in prison with Nathan Leopold. Dante plays heavily in his father's prison life and that exploration is fascinating. Excellent graphic non-fiction about the power of the arts, friendship, and the danger of losing your way.

A father tells his delinquent son the true story of being blinded and his time in prison. This is true crime, graphic non-fiction, and Dante‘s Inferno all rolled together. The art style actually reminded me of one of my favorite graphic novels from last year, My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, in that they both use a lot of cross hatching. Though I sometimes got bogged down in the literary analysis sections, there were a couple lovely emotional payoffs towards the end that I really enjoyed.
