I Am No One
I Am No One | Patrick Flanery
Jeremy O'Keefe, a middle-aged Professor of History, returns to his native New York after a decade teaching at Oxford, hoping to reconnect with his daughter and rebuild the life he left behind. He settles into a rhythm of long evenings spent alone after a day teaching students he barely knows. Then a strange encounter with a young man who presumes an acquaintance Jeremy cannot remember and a series of disconcerting events leave him with a growing conviction that he is being watched. The young man keeps appearing, a haunting figure lingers outside his apartment at night, and mysterious packages begin to arrive. As his grip on reality seems to shift and turn, Jeremy struggles to know whether he can believe what he is experiencing, or whether his mind is in the grip of an irrational obsession. I Am No One explores the tenuous link between fear and paranoia in our post-Snowden lives: a world of surveillance and self-censorship, where privacy no longer exists and our freedoms are inexorably eroded.

Story takes a while to pick up steam, but it's nonetheless a deliciously crafted tale of memory, paranoia, and innuendo that's a critique of our modern surveillance society. At first I was put off by the pontifications of the professor protagonist, but I gradually realized the extent to which these were expository. Much of the time we're learning what he already knows, or has already experienced and is still trying to figure out. Very satisfying.

This was a well written book and I'm guessing a stand alone. But I have to say I'm not quite clear on why he was being watched and who actually was doing it. I don't like being left hanging like that. So that is why I give this book ⭐⭐⭐

I liked this novel but didn't love it. A good story about a professor who returned to the US after teaching abroad for 10 years. He questions his memory, is being watched, and receives suspicious boxes. Interestingly, it explores the perceptions of multi-racial relationships...very open-minded and a good touch!

Jeremy has been hired as a professor of German history at NYU. Though comfortable in his new life, and happy to be near his daughter once again, Jeremy feels the quiet pangs of loneliness.

But soon, boxes containing records of his online history are delivered to his apartment, a man seems to be following him, and his mom receives anonymous phone calls about her son. Why would anyone want to watch him and tell him he was being watched?

#TBR 😱

JanuarieTimewalker13 Of course I just personalized this and thought : If someone followed my online history they would say think this girl loves books, and she shops on amazon a lot and watches Casey Neistat too much. She desperately needs a life. Hahahaha 8y
HiddenGemBooks @JanuarieTimewalker13 oh my goodness.... if someone looked at my online history they would be concerned with my love for horror and crime novels 😂😅 8y
[DELETED] 1409720085 My online history would say this person loves Amazon and Sephora a little too much. 8y

PirateJenny My online history might get me arrested . . . Really, sir, it was for work! 8y
BetweenThesePages I love the books that have those hidden meanings. The story is fascinating but the theory, meaning, or opinion that drives it is interesting. I saw that this one has to do with censorship and surveillance so now I'm curious to read it! Thanks for bringing it to my attention. 8y

The barely clothed models he abuses become a metaphor for surveillance, offering glimpses of what we (or what Antonioni) think we want to see, those expanses of exposed skin drawing attention to the dominance of the photographer's voyeuristic gaze, standing in for the gaze of the audience, the viewers viewing the viewer viewing the viewed.

This copy is just lovely. Has anyone read it yet? Is it worth such a pretty and sparkling cover? Those little "lights" are so pretty. And I'm a sucker for fog, being near the Bat Area.

Starting this today. Got a due date deadline. My overdue fees at my library are ridiculous! I sometimes feel like I single-handedly support them. 😬

callunakeep Oooh, what body of water is that? Soo jealous! 8y

This book thematically and stylistically made me think of Kafka's "The Trial". It was a little slow to start for me, but the last quarter of it was really captivating. Definitely makes you think about the meaning and importance of privacy, and how easily it can be compromised.
