pickEvery now and again I need a little tune-up/deep dive into my alter ego who is a fulfilled and effective psychotherapist. This is my calling! Yalom is so comfortable in his skin, lending his years of experience and thinking outside of the paradigm of the field to guide budding therapists. If only I had this when I was young!

I‘ve been going through this book super slowly, taking notes and going back to certain chapters again & again. It‘s been an incredible help in finding my way into being a therapist.
I‘ll probably keep it close, just reading a chapter here & there.
Real role models are such a rare gift & Yalom is definitely one as a therapist but he‘s also such a mensch, it shines through in all his books 🔥

pickA compassionate look at the relationships among therapists and their patients. Written for newly-minted therapists but a refreshing read for seasoned practitioners and an intriguing look behind the curtain for nontherapists. While I don't agree with all of Yalom's views, I appreciate his discussion of the beauty and healing power of the therapeutic relationship. It's certainly why I do what I do each day.

Sam: "I'm a therapist and this is not the first time I've read this book. It reminds me to come back to the here and now. Yalom says that you should have 'rabbit ears' and be open to actually listen to what people say. In nine years, I've learned that therapy is also about having that relationship with yourself. You can only take others as far as you are willing to go yourself."
This is one of my most opened and read and skimmed and underlined books of all time. It was read during graduate school, and then again the night before I saw my first client, and has been used many days since then for a calming reminder of what is most important and essential in the client-therapist relationship: genuineness, empathy, and vulnerability. We are all on this journey together ☀️.
