The Closest I've Come
The Closest I've Come | Fred Aceves
5 posts | 8 read | 2 to read
Read the book Morris Award finalist Sonia Patel called "a brilliant, subtle debut," and Kirkus Reviews hailed as "heart-wrenching, funny, hopeful, and not-to-be-missed" in a starred review! The Closest Ive Come is a must-read from talented first-time author Fred Aceves, in the tradition of Walter Dean Myers. Marcos Rivas yearns for love, a working cell phone, and maybe a pair of sneakers that arent falling apart. But more than anything, Marcos wants to get out of Maesta, his hood, away from his indifferent mom and her abusive boyfriendwhich seems impossible. When Marcos is placed in a new after-school program, he meets Zach and Amy, whose friendship inspires Marcos to open up to his Maesta crew, too, and starts to think more about his future and what he has to fight for. Marcos ultimately learns that bravery isnt about acting tough and being macho; its about being true to yourself. The Closest Ive Come is a story about traversing real and imagined boundaries, about discovering new things in the world, and about discovering yourself, too.

My grade 10 students are doing podcasts based on coming of age novels they are buddy reading. Another grade 10 teacher and I thought we should also do one and we read the tagged book. I loved this story of 15-year-old Marcos who lives in the projects, has a checked out Mom and is trying to make something of his life, despite the obstacles in his way. Really good book.

megnews What a great, creative assignment. I would have loved this. 2y

Checked this book off my #WeeklyForecast.

Sophomore Marcos navigates his abusive home life, neighborhood poverty, girls, friendships, and school in this young adult novel.

Really excited that this author will be coming to visit our school and do a book talk/signing for 50 of our students in March! Looking forward to reading this one and sharing it with my kiddos 😁

Quick, easy read but extremely relatable to the underprivileged school district that I work in. Some mature language but a heartfelt story.
